The Evil Dead Remake Is Unbelievably Violent Says Diablo Cody

Posted: 19 Nov 2011 10:34 AM PST

Diablo Cody talks rewrites on The Evil Dead

Diablo Cody (Young Adult, Jennifer's Body) was brought on to do rewrites for director Fede Alvarez's The Evil Dead remake/reboot. Collider recently caught up with the celebrated screenplay writer to find out more about the project.

Diablo Cody called the film unbelievable violent, and wants fans to know that she understands the inner workings of the franchise.

"I wouldn't have even gotten involved if Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell hadn't been involved as well, they're producing it, and so of course I was like "Alright I have to do this" because I'm such a fan of the original, and the whole original series in fact. But I was nervous to take the job because I thought "Ugh, I'm gonna get shit for this. People are not gonna like this, because all people know of me is like Juno and they think I'm gonna pollute The Evil Dead with like wacky dialogue and cute stuff and folk music, and it's like "No, look I understand what this is. I'm interested in storytelling here and making it scary and good and true to the original." I feel like people will hopefully see Young Adult and go "Oh, okay that's a horrifying movie maybe she could pull it off (laughs)."

She continued by saying this about the rewrite process.

"Because the director's draft was really scary, I tried to stay away from some of the big horror set pieces. I didn't wanna mess with his vision, because he's the one who ultimately has to shoot it. That being said, there is a moment near the-I mean it's unbelievably violent (laughs). Occasionally I threw in a wound here or there. I didn't write anything extravagant."

Does anyone think that saying there is a twist is one of the worst, if not the worst, spoiler you can give?

Posted: 19 Nov 2011 10:42 AM PST

I can't help but notice that even when people are being knowledgeable that you don't want to know anything about a movie, they don't mind saying there's a twist as if that's not a spoiler. For myself, it's probably the worst thing you could have said out of all other things since it totally ruins the entire experience and effect of a twist.

Instead of being able to play along and then have your mind blown, you end up not trusting and second guessing everything anyone says and then when the twist comes it's just like "oh, that's what it was."

While I appreciate the fact that people who do this are trying to not ruin the movie for me, I feel it is crucial to know that saying a twist exists is in fact, a spoiler.

Marvel's Official Website For The Avengers Gives Vague Teaser About The Loki Threat

Posted: 19 Nov 2011 09:06 AM PST

Source: Marvel Over at the official website for Marvel Studios' Avengers, each character has a bio as part of the site's slick new design. There's isn't any new information there except for when you read Loki's bio. This isn't a huge revelation by any stretch of the imagination but I believe it does merit some attention. BIO: "After his bid to overthrow the throne of Asgard was thwarted by his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the evil Loki (Tom Hiddleston) retreated to lands unknown to plot his revenge. Not just against his brother, but against Earth, whose inhabitants Thor now protects. Loki, now returns with a nefarious plot to conquer Earth and will stop at nothing to see his vision realized. When his misuse of power threatens the entire planet, it may take more than The Avengers to stop him." What could this cryptic line possibly be referring to?

Speaking with Movie Fone, Colin Firth - best known for his Oscar-winning The King's Speech - confirmed recent reports/rumors that he's been 'approached' about Spike Lee's upcoming remake of the 2003 Korean film/manga series Oldboy, where he could play the villain (Christian Bale was also up for the role, but it looks like he has since passed on the project). However, Firth also says that his being in the film has yet to be confirmed, and that he's just 'heard about it'. It sounds like he's only been offered the role and negotiations have yet to begin. Harvey Pekar Gets Statue Tribute in Cleveland

Posted: 19 Nov 2011 06:22 AM PST

Harvey Pekar gets honored at the Cleveland Heights Public Library

Joyce Brabner has launched a project to honor her late husband Harvey Pekar with a statue at the Cleveland Heights Public Library, which he loved. Created by sculptor Justin Coulter, the bronze statue will be mounted on a desk, with Harvey Pekar emerging from a comic book panel, while the reverse side will have panels on which participants can draw their own comics. The desk will always be supplied with writing materials and art supplies.

Noted Joyce Brabner, "Harvey always felt that comics were modern art and literature, and he loved the Cleveland Heights Library. This is especially for people who are using their library cards instead of credit cards to manage tough times - and to encourage creativity. Inside the desk we'll also put things like some of the books Harvey read that opened his eyes, and got him interested in writing, music and a wider world. The installation will celebrate comics as a medium, with any money left over to be used to add graphic novels to the library's collection. We've made a good start. We offer rewards for pledges. It would be great if we could get the rest of the amount needed to fund the project. Every little bit helps!"

Just as Harvey Pekar wrote about his own life in his comics, he thought that anyone could do the same. He was known to say, "Comics are words and pictures. You can make anything you want with words and pictures. Anybody's life story is potentially the source of a great novel, comic book or movie."

Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, directors of the acclaimed HBO Films/Fineline feature film American Splendor, which was based on Harvey Pekar's work, said, "A desk in a Cleveland library - we can't think of a more fitting and quintessentially Pekaresque way to pay tribute to Harvey. Here's hoping these items serve the next poet laureate of the ordinary."

The project is being funded by private donors and has a deadline of Monday, Dec. 5 at midnight. For more information on the project: clickHere
