Ashton Kutcher Is a Twitter Quitter Over Paterno Scandal

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 11:31 AM PST

Ashton Kutcher is making headlines again... but this time it doesn't involve a hot blonde, his marriage, or his TV job.

ashton-kutcher.jpg

Using his Twitter, the "Two and a Half Men" star showed his support for fired Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, not knowing he was axed for his role in a child sex abuse scandal. Kutcher later realized his blunder and made a vow to his followers. "As of immediately I will stop tweeting until I find a way to properly manage this feed. I feel awful about this error. Won't happen again."

Ironically, the 33 year old heads an anti-sex-trafficking non-profit with Demi Moore called DNA, and created a campaign earlier this year called "Real Men Don't Buy Girls," in the hopes of raising awareness of sex trafficking.

Before learning about the full story behind the Paterno firing, Kutcher, who has 8 million Twitter followers, wrote, "How do you fire Jo Pa? #insult #noclass as a hawkeye fan I find it in poor taste."

Almost immediately, Kutcher's followers responded with a flood of insults, blasting the actor for defending the 84-year-old coach -- who was let go after possibly covering up former Defensive Coordinator Jerry Sandusky's alleged sex abuse of young boys.

Afterwards, Ashton admitted his ignorance, tweeting, "Heard Joe was fired, fully recant previous tweet! Didn't have full story."

Kutcher later deleted his bungled Twitter message and added another that said, "As an advocate in the fight against child sexual exploitation, I could not be more remorseful for all involved in the Penn St. case."

Kutcher writes today that he's now turning over management of his Twitter to his media team "to ensure the quality."

This is Ashton's second Twitter snafu in recent months, as he tweeted on 9/11, "The greatest day of the year," referring to the start of football season. Oops!

Ashton wrote this letter, addressing the Twitter management situation and making another apology.

Up until today I have posted virtually every one of my tweets on my own, but clearly the platform has become to big to be managed by a single individual. When I started using twitter it was a communication platform that people could say what they are thinking in real time and if their facts where wrong the community would quickly and helpfully reframe an opinion. It was a conversation, a community driven education tool, and opinion center that encouraged healthy debate. It seems that today that twitter has grown into a mass publishing platform, where ones tweets quickly become news that is broadcasted around the world and misinformation becomes volatile fodder for critics.

Last night after returning home from work I walked by the television and simply saw a headline that Joe Paterno had been fired. Having no more information than that, I assumed that he had been fired due to poor performance as an aging coach. As a football fan and someone who had watched Joe's career move from that of legend/innovator to a head coach that fulfilled his duty in the booth, I assumed that the university had let him go due to football related issues. With that assumption (how dare I assume) I posted a tweet defending his career. I then when about my evening, had some dinner, did a little work, and about an hour later turned on ESPN where I got the full story. I quickly went back on my twitter account and found a hailstorm of responses calling me an "idiot" and several other expletives that I've become accustom to hearing for almost anything I post. I quickly retracted and deleted my previous post, however that didn't seem enough to satisfy people's outrage at my misinformed post. I truly am sorry if I offended anyone and more over am going to take action to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

A collection of over 8 million followers is not to be taken for granted. I feel responsible for delivering an informed opinion and not spreading gossip or rumors through my twitter feed. While I feel that running this feed myself gives me a closer relationship to my friends and fans I've come to realize that it has grown into more that a fun tool to communicate with people. While I will continue to express myself through @Aplusk I'm going to turn the management of the feed over to my team at Katalyst Media to ensure the quality of it's content. My sincere apologies to anyone who I have offended. It was a mistake that I don't think will happen again.

It takes something pretty special to draw a negative word from Paula Abdul, but Drew Ryniewicz's Wednesday night performance dress did just that.

Abdul praised the 14-year-old X Factor contestant's rendition of Coldplay's "Fix You" before, in a rare moment, slamming her ensemble — a Punky Brewster-style mash-up of an evening gown that Ryniewicz wore with black feather earrings and rainbow hair. "That outfit took the seriousness away. Don't take fashion advice from Simon anymore," Abdul told her.

Although there's no word what was on the iPads, it sounds like they might have contained new material Newman was working on.

"We're lucky the thieves only took our iPads," he added. "Everything was saved in iCloud. I was praying for iCloud to work."

EXCLUSIVE: Stephen Dorff Talks The Motel Life and Boot Tracks

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 09:23 AM PST

Stephen Dorff discusses The Motel Life, Boot Tracks, and more

I recently had the chance to sit down with actor Stephen Dorff to chat about his turn as Stavros in the upcoming 3D epic Immortals, which hits theaters November 11. We also talked about a number of upcoming movies Stephen Dorff stars in, such as The Motel Life, Boot Tracks, and a movie he starred in and produced entitled Brake. Take a look at what he had to say below.

"I did a really cool movie last year called The Motel Life, with me and Emile Hirsch, Dakota Fanning, and directed by the Polsky Brothers. They're new directors who have produced a lot of movies like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. This film is really strong. I play a character with one leg, so it was really challenging. It's probably one of the best scripts I've ever read in this business, and I've been doing this for a long time. I'm really excited about that. I just did a film called Boot Tracks with Michelle Monaghan and Willem Dafoe, which was directed by David Jacobson. He's an interesting guy, and the movie has kind of a Badlands feel. Michelle is really awesome in it. There's another movie called Brake that I produced, and we sold it to IFC. They're going to release it theatrically next year, probably in March. I'm excited about that, because it's a real tour de force performance piece. I don't know how big that movie will be, because it's kind of limited in what the film is, but it's pretty strong, and I'm excited about that."

We also talked about Felon, the 2008 prison movie he starred in and produced, which I happen to be a big fan of. Felon director Ric Roman Waugh is putting together a new movie entitled Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson. When I asked him if he might star in that, it seems that won't happen, although he wants to work with the director again. Here's what he had to say about Ric Roman Waugh, and the growing cult status of Felon.

"Yeah, he's going to start shooting with Dwayne Johnson. Yeah, I'm excited for him because, Felon, he just killed it in that movie. He did such a good job, but we got such a horrible release. We opened in New York and L.A., but it was downloaded almost as much as The Dark Knight. That movie has become one of these Boondock Saints kind of movies on DVD. Kids everywhere come up to me and say, 'Felon!' I was excited about that one, because that was the first movie I ever produced, with my friend Tucker (Tooley), who runs Relativity now with Ryan Kavanaugh. Ric was a director he brought to me, and I think he's fantastic and I'm excited he's getting behind the camera again. After Felon, he had a couple he was on that never got off the ground. It's so difficult these days to get a movie going. But I'd love to work with him. There was talk... he had one part in there, but I read it and I didn't really see myself in the part. Ric and I talked and he said, 'Look, Dorff, if I have something, I'm coming to you directly. I didn't think you'd want this, but tell me what you think?' I said we should just wait, and you go kill it with The Rock on this one. It was like a cop part, but if the part is not on the page, there's not a lot I can do with it. It's not a movie about the cop, it's a movie about The Rock. For Ric, that's a big step up, budget-wise. He's working with $20 million, I think. With Felon, I think we made that for $3 million."

The Motel Life comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Dakota Fanning, Emile Hirsch, Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson, Joshua Leonard, Hayes MacArthur, Garrett Backstrom, Shae D'lyn. The film is directed by Alan Polsky, Gabe Polsky.

Boot Tracks comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Michelle Monaghan, Ray Winstone, Stephen Dorff, Tara Buck. The film is directed by David Jacobson.

Snitch comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon. The film is directed by Ric Roman Waugh.

Stephen King's Bag of Bones A&E Miniseries Gets Online Prequel

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 08:35 AM PST

A&E Network has launched an online narrative prequel, Dark Score Stories, to Stephen King's Bag of Bones, a four-hour epic miniseries based on The New York Times #1 bestselling novel, and featuring Pierce Brosnan's return to television. The Dark Score Stories website is a visual and interactive exploration of the setting and characters of Stephen King's Bag of Bones through a series of eerie, animated images, striking black-and-white still photographs and audio interviews. Take a look at three of these photos below.

In Dark Score Stories, characters from the upcoming miniseries (including those played by stars Pierce Brosnan, Annabeth Gish and Melissa George) come to life in seven striking, photojournalistic portraits and oral histories. Each vignette will provide a glimpse into every day life at Dark Score Lake, Bag of Bones setting, and is introduced with an animated still - a unique visual technique with subtle, mysterious movements hinting at the dark secrets bubbling beneath the surface of each tale. Visitors to the site will find a series of secrets hidden in the rich detail of each image, recognizable especially to Stephen King fans.

"The worlds and characters of Stephen King have an incredible depth," said Guy Slattery, Senior Vice President of Marketing, A&E Network. "Dark Score Stories is a great opportunity for fans to explore the rich world of Bag of Bones before they experience the excitement of our premiere."

The haunting photography is by award-winning Danish photojournalist Joachim Ladefoged, whose work has previously appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek and Time. Dark Score Stories was created for A&E by Campfire, a marketing agency founded by the creators of The Blair Witch Project.

Bag of Bones is a ghost story of grief and lost love's enduring bonds, about an innocent child caught in a terrible crossfire and a new love haunted by past secrets. Melissa George (In Treatment), Annabeth Gish (Brotherhood), Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls), William Schallert (The Patty Duke Show), Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills, 90210) and Caitlin Carmichael (True Blood) also star in the television event premiering Sunday, December 11 and concludes on Monday, December 12, airing at 9PM ET/PT on both nights.

Bag of Bones is produced by Sony Pictures Television for A&E. Executive producers are Mark Sennet for Mark Sennet Entertainment, Inc., Mick Garris for Nice Guy Productions, Inc. and Stewart Mackinnon for Headline Pictures Limited. Brian Gary and David Davoli are the co-executive producers. Mick Garris directed the Matt Venne penned script, based on The New York Times #1 bestseller by Stephen King.

EXCLUSIVE: Stephen Dorff Talks Immortals

Posted: 10 Nov 2011 09:23 AM PST

Stephen Dorff talks Immortals

Stephen Dorff discusses playing Stavros in Immortals, working with Tarsem Singh and Henry Cavill, future projects, and more.

Actor Stephen Dorff has found a way to tread through both the indie and studio movie landscapes throughout his career. For every Blade, World Trade Center, and Public Enemies on his filmography, there is a Cecil B. Demented, Felon (which is a fantastic and underrated drama, by the way), and Somewhere. Stephen Dorff's next big-screen appearance is the big-budget 3D adventure Immortals, which arrives in theaters nationwide November 11. The actor portrays Stavros, a shady thief who ends up as an ally to Perseus (Henry Cavill) in his quest to defeat King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). I recently had the chance to sit down with Stephen Dorff to discuss Immortals, and much more. Here's what he had to say below.

First of all, when you first got on the set and started to see this whole world unfold, were you a little bummed out that you didn't get to wear one of those awesome helmets?

Stephen Dorff: No, well, at one point, I had a helmet for the end battle, but it didn't quite work. There's some great, weird costumes going on in this movie. I liked that Stavros was kind of simple. He has those pants and this weird thing on his neck. No, I didn't have a helmet, but it would've been kind of cool.

I thought Stavros has one of the more interesting character arcs in the movie. He starts out as this thief and kind of an outcast, and starts to go the other way. Were you more drawn to that arc, or working with (director) Tarsem Singh?

Stephen Dorff: I think it was more to do something bigger and hit the commercial world a little bit. I have a lot of faith in Tarsem as a director, but I also loved the part too. I thought it was a cool character who is almost the most human out of everybody. He's someone the audience can identify with. Mickey is very evil, Henry is avenging his mother's death, Freida (Pinto) is the oracle sensing this stuff. Everybody is sensing these things, and then all of a sudden you have this normal guy who says, 'Well, I'm going south because there are hot chicks that way.' I had a good time doing it.

Yeah. Stavros is basically the everyman. In this crazy world where anything can really happen, he's the one normal guy.

Stephen Dorff: Yeah, that's what I liked about him. I hope the audience does as well. It seems like the fans will like this. It seems like a crowd-pleaser. I feel like people have been let down a lot, by these big movies. I feel they all look the same, they have bad effects, they feel rushed and converted. I felt this was made the right way. It's not a comic book, so it has its own original intro thing. At the same time, you have Tarsem, who has something to prove, and I think really made the film for 3D fans. I hope it feels a little more grounded.

One of the things I was really blown away by, was not only the 3D, but the scope of these sets. How much of these sets were actually practical? Were there a lot of green screens?

Stephen Dorff: The thing that Tarsem really fought for, which I thought was awesome, was there were actually these huge sets built, with green screen floods behind it. In the village set, for example, we had real horses, real atmosphere, extras walking around. It felt real. It wasn't like we were just in front of a curtain, like I hear the way movies like Sin City are made, like this couch is fake and we're sitting on an apple box, and they have to put it all in. I think by having most of it built for us, and then Tarsem can do his magic afterwards, the scope was so big in his head that it seemed very clear what he wanted us to do. I liked that. I like confidence in the director, and he had a lot.

Henry (Cavill) is about to blow up, with this and Man of Steel coming up. Can you talk about working with him, since most of your scenes are with him? What did you take away from working with Henry?

Stephen Dorff: He's new at it. He seems focused and, it's weird because we're kind of at odds in the movie, and then we team up. But yeah, I wish him luck with Superman. That's a hard one to pull off. Bryan Singer couldn't pull it off, so I hope Zack Snyder can pull it off. That's a whole other ball of wax. I hope it works for him, because that could go the other way too. He was great. The people I really sparked to were Freida Pinto and John Hurt. I thought Luke Evans was cool and there are a lot of cool newcomers on the movie too. A lot of testosterone on the set, so it was always nice when the ladies showed up. I didn't get to see Mickey (Rourke) that much, but I love Mickey.

Did you undergo any training for the fight scenes? We saw some of the footage of Henry training.

Stephen Dorff: Yeah, well he's got a lot more than I do. I didn't really train that much, in the choreography, but there are certain scenes where I would work with the stunt team, a few days before. They knew exactly what they were doing, and the fight scenes I saw was pretty cool. This isn't really my favorite kind of movie, but I feel if you're going to do one, you want it to rock. I definitely feel that this one rocks. What I fear most about acting, is if you do a movie, and it comes off silly, I'm up there forever. It's almost worse for the actor than anybody. The director, they almost forget, but if you're in it, they remember, so you want it to really be good. From what I'm hearing, people are liking it. I really want to see it with an audience. I want it to do well for Tarsem and for all of us.

You have a number of movies in various stages of development. What's the next movie you're planning on jumping on?

Stephen Dorff: I did a really cool movie last year called The Motel Life, with me and Emile Hirsch, Dakota Fanning, and directed by the Polsky Brothers. They're new directors who have produced a lot of movies like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. This film is really strong. I play a character with one leg, so it was really challenging. I really loved Felon and I know (director) Ric Roman Waugh has a new movie he's putting together (Snitch). Is there any chance you'd reunite with him for that?

Stephen Dorff: Yeah, he's going to start shooting with Dwayne Johnson. Yeah, I'm excited for him because, Felon, he just killed it in that movie. He did such a good job, but we got such a horrible release. We opened in New York and L.A., but it was downloaded almost as much as The Dark Knight. What would you like to say to anyone who might be skeptical of Immortals, or those who think it's just another 300?

Stephen Dorff: I think it's bigger than 300. I feel like this one, tech-wise, I think this is the one people want to see. I think Tarsem is a lot different than a lot of directors in town. I think he has something artistic to prove in this big format. I hope people get their money's worth. That's what you want out of this kind of movie. You want to be in a movie where people say, 'I loved Immortals, man!' I like feeling genuine passion from people, because that's why I make the movies. If they're not digging it, then we did something wrong, so I hope they like my character and like the film. That's all I can hope for.

Excellent. Well, that's my time. Thank you so much, Stephen.

Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester return for Strike Back Season 2

Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester will return for Season 2 of Cinemax's hit action series Strike Back, which will shoot ten new episodes on location in South Africa starting in January for debut later in 2012. Rhashan Stone and Michelle Lukes will also return for the new season.

Debuting its first-season finale Oct. 21, the series began an encore run on Cinemax Oct. 28 (10:00 p.m. ET/PT), presenting an episode each Friday night. All episodes are also available on MAXGO and Max On Demand.

Strike Back tells the suspenseful story of a charismatic former U.S. Special Forces operative who joins with a stealth British military unit when a resourceful international terrorist group plots a major attack. Researched by the creators of the series and aided by consultants, the action-packed drama is rooted in the field of counter-terrorism and set against the backdrop of timely global issues.

The Los Angeles Times described the show as "a buddy movie, a simmering life-or-death bromance between its two male leads," while AOL TV observed, "the heart of the show is the relationship between Scott and Stonebridge," calling them "two peas in a badass pod," and the Huffington Post hailed Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester as a "dynamic team."

Strike Back is a Cinemax Presentation in association with British Sky Broadcasting Limited; a Left Bank Pictures Production.
