Spirit of the West Release 'Bulembu': Rockers Record Charity Song for Swaziland

Spirit of the WestCourtesy of John Mann

Spirit of the West frontman John Mann's voice is perhaps best immortalized year after year in university dorm rooms to the tune of their foot-stompin' frosh week anthem 'Home for a Rest.' But if he wasn't at his best then, he surely is now. Fresh off back-to-back trips to Swaziland, Mann has just released a new single in support of the small village of Bulembu -- a once-abandoned mining town that was bought by Bulembu International, a Vancouver-based organized that built it up into a thriving, self-sustaining home to about 2,000 Swazis.

Swaziland is the only developing nation with negative population growth and experts like former Canadian UN special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa Stephen Lewis project that if this trend continues, the population will die out by 2050. Add to that the highest rate of HIV/AIDS infection in the world (38 percent of the nation's population is affected) along with ongoing issues associated with ignorance around the disease, and it's clear help is needed.

"The witch doctors still have quite a bit of control in Swaziland," Mann explains to Spinner. "If you're a man and you have AIDS, the witch doctors will often say, 'Well you go out and you rape the youngest girl you can find, and that will cure you of AIDS.' There's a lot of ignorance there."

Smashing Pumpkins Reissue Nostalgia: Remembering the 'Gish' Tour 20 Years Later

Smashing PumpkinsPaul Bergen

Every music snob has one story about seeing a soon-to-be-legendary band at a venue no bigger than a tour bus toilet, and here's mine.

It was 1991 -- the year punk broke! -- and I was a 16-year-old stranded, as I saw it then, in the cultural wasteland of suburban New Jersey. It had been less than a year since I'd been turned on to the wonders of alternative music via a single mixtape given to me by my girlfriend, who never bothered to hide her animal lust for the dapper men of Depeche Mode, and I had embraced the new sound with all the fervor of a teenage convert.

One night, during a mandatory session in front of MTV's '120 Minutes,' the alternative show hosted at that time by a slithering Brit named Dave Kendall, I found myself gawping with a mixture of awe and incomprehension at a video featuring a group of androgynous rockers carrying out some kind of demonic hippie seance. It wasn't goth, per se -- more like art punk, as imagined by Kenneth Anger. I took note of the band's strange name, as one did in those pre-Internet days, as well as the strange names of the song and the album from which it came. Smashing Pumpkins, 'Siva,' 'Gish.' I sure hoped there was more where that came from.

Dr. Drew on Miley's Marijuana Mess: 'I Don't Think It's That Big of a Deal'

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 11:33 AM PST

"Lifechangers" host Dr. Drew Pinsky shared his thoughts on the Miley Cyrus birthday party pot controversy, saying, "I don't think it's that big of a deal."

pinsky-cyrus.jpg

Miley, who recently celebrated turning 19 at Beacher's Madhouse, said in a video obtained by The Daily.com, "You know you're a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake. You know you smoke way too much f**king weed!"

Dr. Drew pointed out that Cyrus was making fun of the cake, which implied she was smoking too much pot, "but real marijuana addicts don't quite talk like that. I don't think we have somebody who has a drug problem on our hands."

The teen's rep told "Extra" that Miley's comments were "taken out of context" and that the Disney star "intended to be sarcastic."

Jeremy Renner Has a New Definition of Fear

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 11:59 AM PST

Actor Jeremy Renner said that hanging off the side of the tallest building in the world with Tom Cruise took his "breath away."

jeremy-renner.jpg

The "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" star talked with "Extra" correspondent Jerry Penacoli about shooting the action flick's death-defying stunts in Dubai with Cruise. "Tom was laughing at me because I told him I was going to vomit on him."

Renner said, "He's just upside down, mind you, hanging on a wire saying, 'Come on, man, look at this view!' I did look, and I realized the Legoland that was below us were all proper skyscrapers."

But it wasn't just the jumping, the car crashes -- or even explosions -- that bothered Cruise and Renner the most; it was diving into Prague's polluted water.

Renner explained, "I'm coughing, spit out water. I swallowed a whole gulp. [Cruise] stops and says 'I swallowed a whole mouthful of water, we're going to die. Appendages are going to start growing out of our foreheads.' Tom is rapelling down major buildings but a little bug in the water, yeah, it's going to freak him out!"

As for Renner's "M:I" character taking over the franchise in a fifth installment, "The Hurt Locker" actor said, "I'd be up for it, and Tom wants me to do it. I'd be happy to be a part of it. But that's assuming my character doesn't croak [in this one]. I'm not going to tell you."

Find out if he does or doesn't, when "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" rolls into theaters December 21.

Watch as NBC's Community Takes 3 Seasons to Complete Beetlejuice Joke

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 10:11 AM PST

The last couple of weeks haven't been great for fans of NBC's Community. The cult comedy hasn't exactly been a darling in the ratings, and the station has pulled the show from the air, putting them in the dreaded hiatus zone. Now don't be too alarmed, NBC has promised that the show has not been canceled, but if you're a loyal fan you might want to help promote it since NBC has done a lousy job of it. Now enjoy the video! By the way watch closely at the end or you'll miss it. Also if you don't understand the joke, or don't know what Beetlejuice is, first you officially suck. Secondly, I'll be nice and fill in the blanks, in order to have the ghoulishly delightful character Beetlejuice appear it requires his name being said three times.

In House With Lights: 'Siberia,' Dirty Pop and Going on 'World of Warcraft' Raids

Gino DePinto, AOL

In House is AOL Music's series in which we welcome artists into our offices to play some music, chat with our staffers and, generally, just hang out. For our latest visit, we sat down with Lights to discuss her icy new album 'Siberia,' working with Holy F--- to dirty up her previously pristine electro-pop and going on 'World of Warcraft' raids with her fan guild. Yes, really.

Lights flits into one of the myriad backrooms in our New York AOL building like a punk-rock pixie, all thin bones, tatted-up skin and battered jean jacket. The Toronto singer-slash-synth player is, of course, far from punk (even if she did spend a summer on the Vans Warped Tour). In Canada, she's a veritable pop star, having won a best new artist Juno Award before she'd even released her first full-length album, which subsequently went Top 10 and was certified gold.

Her recently released follow-up, 'Siberia, debuted at No. 3 in Canada (behind Adele and Feist) and cracked the Top 50 Billboard charts in the U.S., a great showing for a record that takes her sugar-sweet vocals and layers them over a rough-hewn soundscape that came from her collaboration with experimental indie electronic act Holy F---.

"I was kind of anticipating adversity," she admits. "But most people seem to be on board with 'Siberia.' Some are kind of standoffish when they first hear it because it is different, but I think it grows on people. It's always going to be pop. I love pop. It just so happened that I took this grittier direction."

The Long, Drawn-Out, Polarizing Search For The Walking Dead's Sophia In Under 2 Minutes

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 09:52 AM PST

Source:Vulture It's nothing new when TV shows drags out a plotline in order to create a satisfying payoff for fans when that storyline is finally wrapped up. However, fans of Season 1 of The Walking Dead were accustomed to the blistering pace of the first season, which saw numerous locations and Rick's group depicted as a post-apocalyptic Oregon Trail, zombie killing caravan. The folks over at Vulture apparently share the pain and annoyance of the show's fans as they edited the first 7 episodes of Season 2 to show that this particular plotline could be shown in a single episode, and in under 2 minutes. By now, I'll assume all of you saw the finale and are aware of Sophia's fate. However, this raises more questions as it's rather hard to swallow the fact that Hershel didn't know that the little zombie girl in his barn could potentially be

Das Racist Hit 'Conan' With 'Michael Jackson' and Weirdness -- Video

Brooklyn's own goof-rap phenoms Das Racist made their network TV debut last night on 'Conan' (Nov. 28) with a simple, yet extremely affecting catchphrase: "Michael Jackson. A Million dollars. You Feel Me?" The band's performance of 'Michael Jackson,' from their recent 'Relax' album, features everything that is weird and great from the New York trio. Two lovely ladies back the band on single crash cymbals while hype man Ashok Kondabolu, aka Dap, delivers consistent wisdom from the band's bully pulpit.

Head MC Heems delivers several lazy lines of hushed pop culture references, ending his tirade with the line, "I'm good at rapping." But synth player and beat maker Kool A.D. has the choicest lyrics: "Call me Janet Jackson, I got a hundred dollars/ I got the jungle fever, roll with 100 zebras/ I got a leather jacket, I got a little hat on/ I'm drinking carbonated water by the quarter gallon." And just when you thought it couldn't get any weirder, the guys conjure up the late spirit of Michael Jackson through a spot-on impersonator.
