Martha Wainwright Performs Edith Piaf Covers at Vanity Fair Party

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 01:30 PM PST

Neil Rasmus, BFA

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, around 80 lucky guests gathered at La Grenouille, a cozy French restaurant on New York's Upper East Side, to partake in an evening hosted by Vanity Fair, jewelry designer Solange Azagury-Partridge and Martha Wainwright. The evening's entertainment included the singer-songwriter performing three songs from 'Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, à Paris: Martha Wainwright's Piaf Record' along with selections from her own repertoire.

The intimate affair consisted mainly of Wainwright's friends and family, including her brother Rufus, who formed a cheering section at the top of the stairs to support her every word.

Decked out in jewelry from Azagury-Partridge, 'Wizard of Oz'-style striped tights and a French twist, Wainwright and pianist Thomas Bartlett took the stage, which in this case was a small balcony overlooking the glow of La Grenouille's main floor.

George Clooney on Sex, Fame, and Fart Jokes

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 10:36 AM PST

The debonair George Clooney made the cover of Rolling Stone this week, talking about orgasms, the reality of his life - and why farts make him laugh. Every time.
george-clooney.jpg
When hanging out with his pals, Clooney said, "We think [farts are] one of the funniest things in the history of mankind. Even the idea of a fart makes me laugh. Saying the word 'fart' makes me laugh. I have iFart on my phone. I have remote whoopee cushions. Farts. To me, there's nothing funnier." As to the fame... along with starring in and directing the political drama "The Ides of March," Clooney is also starring in the amusing character drama "The Descendants," from writer/director Alexander Payne. "If it's not nominated for Best Picture, I'll be shocked. It's that good."

Clooney also spoke candidly about his sex life, revealing he lost his virginity at age 16, which he said was "young, very young, too young." He also described his first orgasm. "I believe it was while climbing a rope when I was six or seven years old. I mean, nothing came out, but all the other elements were there. I remember getting to the top of the rope, hanging off the rope, and going, 'Oh, my God, this feels great!'" The Oscar winner is perfectly content with his current lady, former pro wrestler Stacy Keibler, tweeting about "smiling all day long." "She can do whatever she wants," he said. "I rarely tell anybody what they should be doing with their life." As for his life in general, Clooney explained, "I think one of the major misconceptions about me is that I live my life the way people think I lead my life, with hot and cold drinks running everywhere and a party all the time. They think of my life in terms of certain excesses that don't really exist. Things are actually fairly simple." Read more of the interview and see more pictures at RollingStone.com! The issue will be on newsstands Friday.

spoilers

I enjoyed the first one and the Goblet of fire. I thought the last 3 "books" could have been condensed into 1. they just dragged on forever and were all the same story line compared to the rest of the series. not much happens and it gets very repetitive. I tried to enjoy myself but the pacing was terrible in the last 3. I felt no emotion behind any of the battles, which were weak and uninteresting. the story line was so played out by the last film that I was bored out of my mind and wanting an epic battle but all I got was two wizards spraying colors directly at each other; that's really boring for a fight. they don't even yell any magic phrases anymore, just point at each other.

and I can't believe JK killed off characters that didn't need to die, like Dobby. they wasted a lot of time on the horicruxes and just threw characters around not doing much. these are just my fresh thoughts, sorry for the ranting. and don't defend them because the books flushed out so much more, this is r/movies and the movies should stand on their own.

My John Carpenter experience continues with "Escape From New York"

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 09:50 AM PST

I didn't really have any expectations so I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of style and atmosphere this movie pulled off. Plot-wise it's another simple story and premise, but that's not really where Carpenter excels, the tense and tight "race against the clock" works quite well and there are a few awesome action scenes as well as some visuals that won't soon leave me.

The image of Shaft chasing Snake across the bridge in a lincoln with chandeliers bolted to the hood and a full size disco ball hanging from the rear view: priceless. And that Adrienne Barbeau. She looks like 80% of moms, but that body. Damn.

Also another great score by Carpenter. The theme isn't as immediately recognizeable as "Precinct 13" or "the 'ween" but it's effective all the same.

President with a machine gun.

Anyone have any thoughts on why this is a good/bad film and where it ranks among Carpenters work?

Trying to find a movie I watched (spoiler inside)

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 09:48 AM PST

I watched a movie within the last 3-4 years that I would like to find again.

The plot of the movie is that this younger guy owes a lot of money to someone and cannot pay. So an enforcer for the boss picks the kid up and drives him around town trying to teach him a lesson while the kid thinks he will die that day. End of the movie, the enforcer kills himself so the kid can live, and leaves him the debt he owes to the boss.

Does anyone know the title of this movie?

Comic Book Characters in Need of Big Screen Love

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 07:29 AM PST

You may notice a lack of DC characters. This is mainly because the DC characters that lend themselves easily to film adaptations are few and far between. Marvel characters need very little tweaking. Try not to fill the comments section with hatred toward me for that fact. Doctor Strange: As I am no fan of magic as a central plot device due to its inherent undefined laws and the potential for cheesy story manipulation through its use, I must say that Thor did an excellent job of creating a world of "magic" and explaining that our perception of the term is quite flawed, thereby making a tangible, yet no less mystical legitimacy in which I could suspend my disbelief. Marvel would be wise to take note of this when writing their planned Doctor Strange movie. Just like Thor, Doctor Strange, for me has never been one of my favorite characters, due

Killer Pizza Delivered to MGM

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 08:36 AM PST

MGM acquires Killer Pizza from Adam Green

MGM has acquired Adam Green's screenplay Killer Pizza for Raffaella De Laurentiis to produce. We first reported on this project back in May of 2010.

The story, adapted from Greg Taylor's novel, follows a 14-year-old boy who lands a summer job at a pizzeria dubbed Killer Pizza. The teenager soon discovers that the pizza place is actually a front for a monster-hunting organization. Chris Columbus brought the project to MGM, which had been looking for a movie similar to Gremlins and The Goonies.

Back in December, writer Adam Green revealed to us that he may not direct Killer Pizza, since he had only been contracted to write the screenplay. Here's what he had to say about the scope of Killer Pizza last year.

It's a really, really, really big movie so it's been fun, especially because things like Hatchet II or even Frozen, that I know I'm doing independently before I'm even writing them, I write them to fit a certain budget parameter. With Killer Pizza, it's just so huge and big and gigantic and there are scenes in there out of like Clash of the Titans. It's been really fun to sit and write that stuff and now is the part I've been looking forward to the most, because I turn in the script and get notes from Chris Columbus. If someone could've told the kid in me that the guy who wrote The Goonies and Gremlins is going to be giving me notes on a movie... I just can't wait. Normally, you dread the notes process, but I'm really looking forward to this. I hope he just tears it apart because I want to learn so much. If you've noticed, I haven't used the word 'directing' yet. It's been discussed and alluded too, but right now, my contract is to write that movie and that's what I'm doing. For now, I'm just focusing on the task at hand and we'll see what happens."

No production schedule was given for Killer Pizza yet.

Killer Pizza comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Adam Green.

Michael Bolton Says Lonely Island Made Him Breastfeed a Doll -- Exclusive Video

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 01:00 PM PST

Michael Bolton may not be known as hippest cat, but 20 years after taking Percy Sledge's 'When a Man Loves a Woman' to the chart top -- and winning the hearts of middle-aged ladies everywhere -- Bolton is finally enjoying some cool cred thanks to 'Jack Sparrow,' his hilarious collaboration with the Lonely Island.

Mere minutes after bringing the house down with a rousing version of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' at Ontario's Casino Rama in support of his latest album, 'Gems: The Duets Collection,' Bolton sits in front of a fireplace and excitedly describes his first meeting with the Saturday Night Live jokesters.

"We were just talking about what we could do that still retains the integrity of Lonely Island guys -- the shock value, basically -- and how do we do that and make sure that pays off without offending every person who has ever bought a record of mine," he tells Spinner.

Check out the video below to learn more about the 'Jack Sparrow' recording process and how the tan man with the buttery voice found himself breastfeeding a doll. As he says, "This is not your Grandfather's Michael Bolton."
