Anthony Hopkins puts on Italian Shoes for director Kenneth Branagh

Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench are in talks to star in Italian Shoes for Left Bank Films and director Kenneth Branagh.

Richard Cottan is writing the script, which is adapted from Henning Mankell's novel. The plot centers on a retired surgeon, who has become a recluse on a private island in Sweden. The doctor must confront the mistakes of his past, when he is reunited with a former lover.

Production will start at the end of 2012 or early 2013, depending on when both actors are available.

Kenneth Branagh is also attached to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for Fox 2000 and The Boys in the Boat for The Weinstein Company. Martin Scorsese confirmed to direct The Snowman

Back in October, we reported that director Martin Scorsese is in talks to direct The Snowman, an adaptation of Jo Nesbo's novel. Today we have word that Martin Scorsese has officially signed on to direct the film.

The novel centers on Harry Hole, a hard-drinking Norwegian detective who investigates a series of grisly murders. The scarf of one victim is found on a bizarre snowman, who at times appears to be staring into her family's house.

Martin Scorsese will direct The Snowman from an adapted screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan (World War Z). Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce for Working Title Films.

It is said author Jo Nesbo had to sign off on Martin Scorsese directing this adaptation. Jo Nesbo is also not insisting that the movie be filmed in Oslo, Norway, where the novel is set. The Snowman is the seventh novel in Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole book series.

The Snowman comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese.

Ashton & Demi: The Marriage Turned Toxic

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 11:09 AM PST

The issues and doubts that plagued the romance between Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore - the 15-year age difference, his cheating past, her insecurities - are what finally ended their six-year marriage, People.com reports.

As a result, the marriage "had been deteriorating for a long time," a friend of Kutcher, 33, told People this week's cover story. "Ashton was ready to end it, but he wanted to wait for Demi to actually do it. He loved her but couldn't live with her."

Moore, 49, "really wanted to save the marriage but couldn't deal with the pain of his cheating," added the friend.

"If anyone was uncomfortable with the age difference, it was Demi, not Ashton, a Kutcher pal told People. "She drove him crazy after a while with questions and doubts."

People reporter Carlos Greer told "Extra" the two "pretty much have been living this nightmare marriage." Greer said, "Demi doesn't want to be perceived as the jilted wife. She just couldn't put up with it any longer."

Arkells Leave Indie Rock Behind with Fleetwood Mac-Inspired 'Michigan Left'

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 02:00 PM PST

ArkellsUniversal Music Canada

Fast-rising Canadian rockers Arkells were tapped to be the next big indie band out of the Great White North when their 'Jackson Square' album and its accompanying working-man anthem 'Oh, the Boss is Coming' came out in 2008.

But then they discovered pop music.

The resulting new album, 'Michigan Left,' certainly won't rock the lives of the hipster set, but it appears the Ontario five-piece are more interested in rocking radios around the world anyway.

"I think we've come to really appreciating pop music again," lead singer Max Kerman tells Spinner.

The Dark Knight Rises Empire Photos Hint at Batman Vs. Bane Brawl

Posted: 21 Nov 2011 09:34 AM PST

Yesterday, we revealed two new Empire Magazine covers featuring The Dark Knight Rises' Christian Bale and Tom Hardy in full costume as Batman and Bane. Today, more photos from this issue of Empire have arrived, along with new plot and prologue details from director Christopher Nolan. Check it all out below.

We reported last month that a six-minute prologue for The Dark Knight Rises will be attached to prints of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Christopher Nolan has now revealed that the prologue will actually be the first six minutes of the movie, which introduces audiences to Tom Hardy's Bane.

"The Prologue is basically the first six, seven minutes of the film. It's the introduction to Bane and a taste of the rest of the film. With Bane we are looking to give Batman a physical challenge that he hasn't had before. In terms of finishing our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft an epic."

The director also said that The Dark Knight Rises is set eight years after The Dark Knight.

"It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after 'The Dark Knight.' So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state. With Bane, we're looking to give Batman a challenge he hasn't had before. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we're testing Batman both physically as well as mentally."

Costume designer Lindy Hemming also revealed what Bane's mask is really used for.

"He was injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and he needs gas to survive. He cannot survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jaw line and feed into the thing at the back where there are two canisters of whatever it is...the anesthetic."

Tom Hardy himself also commented on his Bane character, and the brutal physicality he displays.

"He's brutal. Brutal. He's a big dude who's incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It's not about fighting. It's about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action."

The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.
