Question about "Tree of Life."

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 11:11 AM PST

I know this is probably the most superficial question about the movie in light of a lot of the experimental filmmaking, but does it ever tell you which brother/son died at the beginning? Also, I thought that Brad Pitt said he shot himself in the head. But my friends said they never mention what happened.

It's a great movie and very challenging on a lot of levels.

Tom Cruise Set for We Mortals Are

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 09:59 AM PST

Tom Cruise takes the lead role in We Mortals Are

Variety is reporting that director Doug Liman has gotten actor Tom Cruise for the lead role in We Mortals Are, formerly know as "All You Need Is Kill".

Based on the graphic novel, the original story is in the vein of Groundhog Day, with a twist: A soldier in a war against aliens finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed. Through the training and battles he experiences in these time loops, he becomes a better soldier.

While a deal with the studio isn't officially signed, Cruise has been weighing this role for some time after continued talks with director Doug Liman.

Sources say Warner Bros.' Jeffrey Robinov always wanted a big star, though the script called for a younger actor like Ryan Gosling or Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The studio has already had the script rewritten to make the character fit Tom Cruise's age.

Dante Harper penned the script with Joby Harold doing the rewrite. Sources said Tom Cruise liked the script so much that Liman traveled to Pittsburgh, where the actor was shooting Paramount and Skydance's One Shot, to meet with the actor about the role.

Though sources close to the studio were a little worried that Cruise may be passive about doing back-to-back sci-fi pics, sources close to Cruise added that his biggest reason for taking the role is Liman's persistence in their talks that both films would be completely different.

Insiders go on to add that Horizons will be his next film he shoots, which will go sometime in March. There are some scheduling issues that need to be worked out but given that Horizons is so far along in the casting process and We Mortals Are still fairly early in the development and pre-production stage, both sides should find a way to work those issues out.

We Mortals Are comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Tom Cruise. The film is directed by Doug Liman.

High Winds Slam Southland -- and the Stars

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 10:51 AM PST

Strong Santa Ana winds ripped through Southern California Wednesday night, wreaking havoc and causing power outages, fallen trees, phone outages and damaged property.

Among the thousands affected were "Grey's Anatomy" star Eric Dane and wife Rebecca Gayheart, who managed to escape their Beverly Hills home after a giant tree fell on it.

According to reports, Gayheart, pregnant with her second child, was putting daughter Billie to bed when the large eucalyptus tree came crashing down shortly after 8 PM.

The L.A. Fire Dept. was called and the family made it safely out of the house.

"Harold and Kumar" co-star Neil Patrick Harris told Kelly Ripa on "Live" about a scary incident involving the gusty winds, recalling, "A few years back, the winds came through and knocked a giant branch of a tree almost onto our house... missed it and smashed through a whole fence."

Eva Longoria, who was on a plane headed to LAX, tweeted, "Almost got rerouted because of the wind!"

Forecasters are calling the Northeast winds, blowing at speeds of up to 100 mph, some of the worst in twenty years. The turbulent weather is expected to continue through Friday.

First act twists in film? (spoilers, of course)

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 10:17 AM PST

I just watched a movie last night, and... well, if I told you what it was you'd know there's a big reveal and that would ruin it for you. I'm watching the AFI Top 100 films right now, most of them I have no idea what they're about, so it's wonderful to see great movies without even knowing their plot or characters.

Anyway, there are movies with what I'd call "first act twists," things that are only surprises if you haven't seen the trailers, or know anything about it. I'd imagine most of them are character reveals, such as John Travolta doesn't have a speech impediment in The General's Daughter. I do recall watching that and thinking "he's not going to talk like that the whole movie, is he?"

The Island breaks out into the 'real world' at the first act turning point.

The Old Man at the beginning is really Sherlock Holmes, in the Pearl of Death

I could name a few from the AFI list, but those movies are too good to spoil anything.

I'd love to hear others though!

In House With The Naked and Famous: Slurping and Shooting to Stop From Going Stir Crazy -- Exclusive Video

Gino DePinto, AOL

In House is AOL Music's series in which we welcome artists into our offices to play some music, chat with our staffers and, generally, just hang out. For our latest visit, we sat down with New Zealand rockers the Naked and Famous to discuss their album 'Passive Me, Agressive You' and their whirlwind 2011.

From the moment the Naked and Famous walked into Spinner's Manhattan office, we could tell the road had exacted a certain toll from the band. The gang of five exuded a palpable, playful energy of going stir-crazy in a tour van as they sat down to discuss the busiest year of their lives.

"We have a couple of Nerf rifles that are $4 each. We modified them so they explode as well. Someone shot someone in the eye on the tour bus and now our tour manager took them from us," drummer Jesse Wood confides to Spinner.

Helena Bonham Carter Undecided On AKIRA

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 09:09 AM PST

This movie just cant seem to lock down a cast. So far we know Garret Hedlund will play Kaneda and Ken Watanabe MIGHT play The Colonel, everything else is up in the air including Helena Bonham Carter who was said to be up for the role of psychic revolutionary leader Lady Miyako. While speaking to MTV the Oscar winner kept it short and sweet.. Get More: Movie Trailers, Movies Blog "I haven't really decided yet," said Bonham Carter, who confirmed she had in fact read the script already. "I don't know yet what I'm going to do next. I'm not really going to talk about it until I've decided whether to do it or not." I'm not expecting too much from this movie, but since it is happening whether we like it or not I at least hope that it's a well made film. So I was hoping that Carter was a sure thing.

Tom Cruise Confirmed For ALL YOU NEED IS KILL

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 08:09 AM PST

The adaptation of the Japanese graphic-novel All You Need Is Kill has been in development for a while, with Tom Cruise interested in the main role for quite some time as well. Now, Variety reports Cruise has agreed to star in the movie, albeit there's no deal officially signed at the moment. Apparently, Warner Bros. Pictures President Jeff Robinov wanted a big star for the movie since the beginning, and despite the fact that the script had a younger actor for the role, like Joseph Gordon Levitt for an example, the studio decided to go with Cruise. The script has already been rewritten so that the character can match Cruise's age. Dante Harper was responsible for the initial script with Joby Harold working on the rewrite. Tom Cruise was so enthused about the script that he had director Doug Liman visit him in Pittsburgh, where the actor was shooting One Shot.

According to RadarOnline, a source claimed the pair began their romance last week. "They have known each other for a long time and he's really been there for her through the whole Ashton thing."

The insider continued, "It's easy for Scott-Vincent to keep his relationships a secret because he's so often photographed hanging out with celebrity clientele. But he's head-over-heels for Demi and there's definitely potential for a lasting relationship between them."

1. He is the CEO of Borba Skin Care products, endorsed by Hollywood starlets like Mila Kunis, Ashley Greene and AnnaLynne McCord.
