Rachael Yamagata Takes Control of Her Destiny With New Album and Label

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 02:00 PM PST

Laura Crosta

"Now that I'm not working with any record labels, I just want to have fun and be with people that I love and trust and make whatever feels right in the studio," says Rachael Yamagata, her smoky voice wafting over on the phone from Easton, MD., where she recorded her new album, 'Chesapeake,' in the home of her producer, John Alagia.

'Chesapeake' may not feature the kinds of desperate piano ballads that made Yamagata's 2004 debut, 'Happenstance,' such a favorite with doomed lovers, but in some ways, the new disc picks up where that much-lauded earlier effort, also produced by Alagia, left off. The album is a return to form after 2008's splintered, two-disc 'Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart,' which ended Yamagata's relationship with major labels but cleared the way for her independence.

Yamagata, who is currently enjoying sold-out shows, spoke to Spinner about the making of 'Chesapeake' and her musical odyssey.

How do you think 'Chesapeake' compares to your first collaboration with John Alagia?

This was very much a live record. We didn't have the luxury of time or even room separation in a lot of recording respects, so we built it differently than we did 'Happenstance.' Musically, I feel like it's more spontaneous. There's still sort of a classic sense to some of the arrangements, but we're playing on different influences. There was a lot of Carpenters being played [around the house], and Beach Boy harmonies. I did some co-writes with Mike Viola, and he certainly has like a Burt Bacharach/Todd Rundgren influence in his progressions. So I think the time period is familiar, but maybe a little bit different than the first record.

Does anyone else think that "Attack the Block" was better than "Super 8" ?

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 08:53 AM PST

I was very excited to see Super 8. I liked J.J. Abrams after I first heard of him in Cloverfield. I think he made (still the best) Mission Impossible 3. But after seeing Super 8 I felt a little disappointed. I may have had too high an expectation.

Later, I stumble upon Attack the Block, and I thought it was amazing. It's one of those movies I found by accident but was glad I found it, like In Bruges. But I tell my friends which one I think was better and no one agrees with me. There's got to be others that do.

If "The Dark Knight Rises" somehow up being a better than "The Dark Knight," would that be the first time in movie history that original < sequel < threequel?

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 10:23 AM PST

After watching the "The Dark Knight Rises" trailer, I was left wondering if it could possibly end up being better than "The Dark Knight." I tried to think of any prior series of movies with escalating quality from first to second to third and couldn't come up with any. Some may argue the Lord of the Rings trilogy qualifies. My eyes rolled back into my head around five hours into "The Return of the King," so I wouldn't know.

I was probably 10 years old when i saw the movie Arlington Road. I dont want to spoil it for anyone, but i completely guessed the ending wrong and it boggled my mind. (probably shouldnt havent been watching this movie at the age of 10... thanks mom and dad!)

Arlington Road: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0137363/

More recently, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood (both in 2007) are amazing films that touch on very deep levels of human interaction that you dont get on a day to day basis.

Please r/movies, help me find this movie

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 09:50 AM PST

So, I saw a movie this summer which I liked, but can't remember the title. It is a kind of documentary about how women/men behave, but with a plot. It had a really long title, and it was settled in Germany(?). Probably recent.

Despite fan criticism and studio fears, Christopher Nolan won't change Bane's voice

Need a HUGE favor, r/movies. Please help.

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 10:14 AM PST

I am currently in quite the heated discussion with a few co-workers. Google has been no help, so I come to you.

In Wedding Crashers, at what point does Will Ferrell show up? Would you consider it the middle or end of the movie? Some of us here disagree. I need your opinions.

Also, I'd really like to know the total run time of the movie, and at what time does he first appear on screen? I'm hoping some bored-at-home redditors might be able to load up the movie and let me know what those timestamps are.

I eagerly await your responses. Thank you in advance for your continued support of our inconsequential office arguments.

Robin References In TDKR Trailer? - Hines Ward, NOT Burt Ward!

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 06:59 AM PST

I know a lot of members here on this site are not American, and don't know much about AMERICAN FOOTBALL "the real football" so i kinda forgive you for not knowing. And a lot of people have been jumping into the chat box saying, "oh did you see Nolan point out Robin in the football scene?" "Nolan is so smart putting in hints of Robin in the movie" Well, I'm sorry to say you're wrong! "not really sorry" We all know that the football scenes were filmed in Pittsburgh at the Steelers stadium. Well, there just so happens to be a wide receiver by the name of Hines Ward on that team (he was just in dancing with the stars awhile back if you saw that), and THAT is who they used in the movie. Sorry to pop your Robin bubbles.
