Katherine Heigl: 'They Wanted Me to Be America's Sweetheart, Then I Opened My Mouth'

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 12:04 PM PST

Katherine Heigl covers the January issue of Elle, and explains why she wants the public to like her again, saying, "I've never really been America's sweetheart, but for a minute I think that's what they wanted me to be. And I had 'em for a second thinking maybe I was. And then I opened my mouth and it was clear I wasn't."

katherine-heigl.jpg

She added, "There's so much of my mother's caustic, sarcastic, irreverent take on things. But I also love and embrace it. I look at some of what I had to say, and I'm like, oh my God, I would tell myself to shut up too."

Heigl's controversial career moves in the last several years included failing to turn in her performances for an Emmy on "Grey's Anatomy" in 2008 because she felt like the writers didn't give her good enough material.

The sassy actress also interviewed with Vanity Fair in 2007, and criticized the comedy "Knocked Up" -- a film that many believe launched her career -- for depicting women to be "humorless and uptight," while the men are portrayed as "goofy and fun-loving."

Heigl acknowledges why she may not be the most loved celebrity in Hollywood, but she wants to be respected, saying, "I think it's a female thing. I'm just that a-hole who really wants everyone to like me and it's a ridiculous goal and it's an impossible goal. But I think if I keep pushing forward and showing myself through and through, they will see me again for what I really am, and what has been sort of spun about me."

Celebrity Magazine Covers

Scarlett Johansson, Cosmopolitan

"I'm attracted to the quality of being adventurous and perhaps a bit mischievous and also questioning authority and being proactive. If that makes up a quintessential bad boy, then whatever. I'm not at all attracted to meanness or bullying, but I do think conviction is attractive. I mean, really, who doesn't?"

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Architectural Digest

Talk show giant Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi cover Architectural Digest sharing the inside of their incredible Beverly Hills home. The property sits on a three-acre lot with a luxurious pool and amazing views of L.A., but DeGeneres remembers she wasn't always so fortunate. "We never had a house when I was growing up. We always rented. But my father would dream, and we used to look at houses all the time. I'd pick out which bedroom would be mine and get all excited." The couple just put their home on the market for $49 million.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Parade Magazine

The actress revealed, "There is. I know what the story is. It's a small story, but I think it should be told. The question is: what's the right time to tell it?" On fraternal twins Loretta and Tabitha, Parker said, "They're talking, they're running, they need me. Loretta is deeply inquisitive; "'Do you see that, do you hear that, Mama?' She constantly checks that we are connecting with her." Her sister is the family princess; "Tabitha does not give; she receives." Parker believes that James Wilkie is most like her. "He has neuroses that I can see are mine. This need to strive for perfection — I have some control over that because I'm a grown-up and have perspective, but he's still really frustrated when he can't do something spot-on. But James Wilkie is a lot more bold than I was. I was not outgoing." Read more of Parade's interview with Parker!

Olivia Wilde, Nylon Magazine

Wilde talked about everything from co-star Daniel Craig ("Daniel Craig is the sh*t and he doesn't even know it"), her text message peeves ("Three Xs and a smiley face.... Emoticon? Deal breaker!") and her skinny jeans ("they were the kind you would put on and swoosh around in, but then I got a divorce and self-medicated with food"). Nylon's August issue is on newsstands now.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Elle

"Sometimes it's hard being with someone for a long time. We go through periods that aren't all rosy. I always say, life is long and you never know what's going to happen. If, God forbid, we were ever not to be together, I respect him so much as the father of my children. Like, I made such a good choice. He's such a good dad. You can never be relaxed or smug and think, I've got this thing. That's also part of it — keeping yourself on your toes. I'm not going to take this for granted."

Kim Kardashian, Cosmopolitan

"Sometimes I feel like a zoo animal," admits Kardashian. "I'll be at a restaurant, and someone will put their phone in front of my face and take a picture without saying hi."

Katy Perry, Rolling Stone

"I started praying for breasts when I was, like, 11," she laughed. "And God answered that prayer above and beyond, by, like, 100 times, until I was like, 'Please, stop, God. I can't see my feet anymore. Please stop!' I was a lot more rectangular then. I didn't understand my body. Someone in sixth grade called me 'Over-the-shoulder boulder holder.' I didn't know I could use them. So, what I did was, I started taping them down. How long did I tape them down for? Probably until I was about 19. And, no, I don't have any psychological pain because of it." Watch the behind-the-scenes coverage of her photo shoot and read more of the interview at RollingStone.com.

Emma Watson, Vogue

It would be awful to be a young actress today. Back in the good old days, before e-mail, you could decide how you wanted to be, how you wanted to define yourself." Roberts also says she doesn't have any plans to direct in the near future. "I can direct breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I take pride in my kitchen, but I'm not going to direct a movie." "You know what you want, and you become stronger mentally, emotionally, and physically... but also, things have happened recently that have pushed me to grow. My father died, and having gone through that really made me think about my life and how I want to live it." Diaz's friend Drew Barrymore also had this to say about her "Charlie's Angels" pal. "She's my sister, but we bro out and have crazy adventures. I always know that she is game. Most people don't know this, but she's very edgy... that has been a big part of our friendship, knowing that she will throw down at any time as well as that sisterly, cozy, nurturing love that we have." "I had all these number-one records, and I had sold all these albums, and it was sort of this turning point: Am I going to try and embrace Hollywood and assimilate to that culture? American Psycho Remake Ordered by Lionsgate

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 10:24 AM PST

Lionsgate has hired Noble Jones to pen a script for a remake of the modern horror film American Psycho. Noble's only notable credit is Second-Unit Director for The Social Network. The project has not been given a green light however, which could only mean that they would really have to like the story before moving forward. American Psycho, based on the novel of the same name, was written by Bret Easton-Ellis and, as most of you know, was previously turned into a feature film in 2000. That film starred The Dark Knight Rises star Christian Bale as Patrick Batemen, a rising business man during the day, brutal serial killer by night. The film, directed by Mary Harron, is a violent mind [frick] like no other, but it is extremely well done. It also pushed the boundaries of what could be accepted in a Rated-R film. The film also starred Reese Witherspoon,

COMICS: Animal Man #4 Review

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 07:23 AM PST

I think this review will probably be pretty short, because I have nothing but praise for Animal Man and I don't want to spoil this issue for those who have not yet read it. I'll give a quick synopsis of what has happened so far before I review this issue: Buddy Baker (Animal Man) is living the quiet life with his family, having stopped his super heroics. His daughter Maxine begins to exhibit some strange new powers of her own (resurrecting dead animals and turning a man's limb into a chicken claw) so they set out to find "the Red", which is basically the source of Animal Man's powers, so they can find out what's going on. They talk to some totem god things, who tell them that the Red is under attack from "the Rot", or the forces of death. They are then attacked by terrifying creatures called

The Extra List: Top 5 Celebrity Twitter Quitters

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 11:46 AM PST

In the wake of his war with American Airlines, during which he was tweeting about the situation, Alec Baldwin decided to suspend his Twitter account.

The "30 Rock" star tweeted, "Let's play a game called Mass Unfollowing. I want to crash this acct and start again. But, tonight at 10 PM, NY time, unfollow me."

The actor joins a growing list of celebrities who have left the social networking juggernaut. Here are the top five in the Twitter Quitter club.

Top 5 Twitter Quitters

5. Chris Brown

Brown was known for ranting at his detractors via Twitter — especially when it concerned his former relationship with singer Rihanna — but he finally opted to close his Twitter account altogether in November.

4. Gilbert Gottfried

The comedian stepped in it when he sent out a slate of offensive Twitter missives about the tragic Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March — and it cost him his job as the longtime voice of the Aflac Duck. The offending posts were deleted and although the funnyman's account is still up, the tweets are far more generic.

3. Miley Cyrus

No one is entirely sure why teen singing sensation Miley Cyrus decided to shut down her Twitter account. But it was probably a smart move considering how her recent video jokes about being a pothead are being interpreted.

2. John Mayer

Mindy McCready Says She Protected Her Child

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 11:18 AM PST

Country star Mindy McCready broke her silence on "Good Morning America" today after being accused of abducting her 5-year-old son, Zander. McCready said she took Zander away because he "is in great danger, both physically and emotionally" with his legal guardian -- Mindy's mother, Gayle Inge.

Mindy continued, "What I did was to protect my child and there is not a person in the world that is ever gonna tell me that is wrong."

The singer said Zander was terrified after U.S. Marshals stormed the abandoned house they were hiding in, and took the child away. The mother and son were found hiding in the closet. She recalled her son's words, saying, "'Please leave me alone, I want to be with my mommy!'"

McCready admits she took Zander across state lines to Arkansas, even though she lost custody of the boy in 2007 when she went to jail for battery (after a scuffle with her mother) and resisted arrest. She was sent to jail a second time the following year after violating her probation, and served two months.

The 36-year-old shot to superstardom when she was just 18, and has had a long battle with substance abuse. McCready appeared on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" in 2009.

Now pregnant with twins, Mindy maintains her troubled past is behind her and wants Zander back. The child is currently with foster parents.

Watch more with Mindy on "GMA" Friday, and see the full interview on "20/20" at 10 PM/ET on ABC.

While promoting his latest film, a spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Mark Strong was asked about Andrew Stanton's science fiction epic John Carter, a big screen adaptation based on the classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. In the film, Strong plays Matai Shang, who is the leader of Holy Therns. Here is what he had to say: "He's not evil," the actor cautioned. "He's not like Lord Blackwood in 'Sherlock Holmes.' Matai Shang's race of people, they don't cause destruction -- they manage destruction. So he goes around cleaning up. If two tribes are at war, he will choose a tribe, give them the technology to beat the other one, and that solves the problem. And in doing so, there's really no war. [Director] Andrew Stanton's taken some liberties with the narrative. The Therns are more like masters of the universe now. At last, I get to play a master of the

DVD REVIEW: NEVERWHERE 15th Anniversary Edition

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 09:08 AM PST

In the early days before cable and satellite TV, it seemed like Dr. Who was the only scifi/fantasy the BBC was piping over to the colonies, and you had to sit through Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and The Electric Company before it came on. But suddenly there was a need for more shows to fill new channel space and you found yourself watching alien things from foreign cultures. Actors who spoke in strange shakespearean accents. Barbaric! Whereas there used to be two camps, those who dig the BBC aesthetic, and those who don't. Nowadays more and more yankees are getting turned onto shows emanating from the UK. And even with the less than spectacular special effects that still plague most of their shows, there are some gems that outshine poor budgets. In Neil Gaiman's cult BBC miniseries, Neverwhere, average joe Richard Mayhew (Gary Bakewell) is hurtled into a supernatural world when he meets Door,
