Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt are swell, but this bittersweet comedy is neither bitter nor sweet enough.

OK Reddit, help me plan my xmas movie schedule

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 11:43 AM PST

Going to be home alone for the week from the 26th and I don't have a TV. Go ahead and curate my movie schedule. Assume I can watch anything that's been released on DVD.

Would be great to have days planned by theme

eg: 26 Dec - Classics

  • Casablanca
  • Manhattan
  • Metropolis

27 Dec - Sci Fi

  • Moon
  • Spaceballs
  • Solaris

28 Dec - Foreign Language, etc etc).

  • Soy Cuba
  • Delicatessen
  • Todo Sobre Mi Madre

29 Dec - Best films you never heard of

  • ???
  • ???
  • ???

You get the drift. Don't mind if you just suggest 1 film, a whole themed day, or my whole week.

If a film has been remade, please try to specify which version you're recommending by year of release.

Don't let me down!

EDIT: Don't feel you need to stick to the themes I have suggested, and you can keep going all the way through to when I go back to work on the 4th of Jan.

LOGAN'S RUN: The Complete Series Coming to DVD April 2012

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 10:36 AM PST

In the post-apocalyptic 24th century, the planet has been devastated by nuclear war and surviving communities exist in isolation. Citizens live in total bliss in the City of Domes until their 30th birthday, the date they are lured to an event called Carousel. They believe they might be renewed in a new form but instead they are executed. Not everyone accepts the propaganda and efforts to escape to Sanctuary, located outside of the city, are increasing. These "Runners" are hunted by Sandmen. Although he's a Sandman, Logan begins to question if being renewed actually occurs and if the outside is truly uninhabitable. When Logan tries to capture Jessica, she fuels his doubts and he ultimately joins her in an attempt to find Sanctuary. When news spreads of Logan's rebellion, Logan's former partner is sent in pursuit of the pair as they make their way through an unfamiliar world. "We

2011: Music's Year of the Dog

Coma CinemaWonderbread Tapes

Cats were the "it" symbol of cool last year, especially in the indie-rock world. Best Coast, Wavves, the Klaxons and more capitalized on the trend, putting cats on album covers, in music videos and, as Lady Gaga did, even wearing a Hello Kitty dress. But as the music world fell in love with anything that purred, their mortal enemies were plotting their revenge.

And so, 2011 became the year of the dog. Cats still made the occasional cameo -- don't worry, Snacks the Cat, people still follow you on Twitter even if you're no Boo the Dog -- but it was clear that canines were the music's worlds new best friend.

It's tough to tell just yet who will take 2012 (Bears? Owls? Sea Monkeys?!?) but as the year comes to a close, let's shout-out the music scene's top dogs of 2011.

EDITORIAL: How And Why Movie Studios Need To Put An End To "Bootlegs"

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 10:40 AM PST

When Warner Bros. announced that the six minute prologue for The Dark Knight Rises would be shown only in 70MM IMAX theaters, many fans realised that they would be unable to check it out for themselves. The closest screen to me is over 200 miles away and as desperate as I am to see it, it's simply not worth the time and expense of travelling such a distance. So, when a bootleg version turned up a couple of days ago, of course I was going to watch it. How I wish I hadn't. I'm not sure what was worse. The low quality version which made the masked face of Bane look like one big black blob or the one that cut off half the screen and was out of sync with the audio. Either way, it's hard to dispute just how awful bootlegs are. Sure, they give us an idea

Katy Perry Meows at The Grove: 'Women Are Like Cats'

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 11:28 AM PST

Pop sensation Katy Perry's second fragrance line, Meow, hits Nordstrom's exclusively, and the singer revealed to "Extra's" Mario Lopez where her love of cats originated. "It stems from cat hate, actually. I didn't really understand cats until my first cat, Kitty Purry, walked into my life and wouldn't leave."

The spunky songstress continued, "I started to realize I think women are like cats. They want to be loved on their own time; they want people to earn their affection. And they won't meet you at the door unless you're really nice."

Perry, who recently celebrated a one-year anniversary with husband Russell Brand, gushed, "We just stayed home because a lot of our life exists out in the open. So we just wanted to have that moment to ourselves."

She added, "We ride bikes a lot... we're pretty normal... is that okay?"

Katy's faithful fans enthusiastically lined up at The Grove to see the curvaceous beauty -- who made a grand entrance on the trolley, and laughed, "It was pretty intense... I like to do big entrances!"

Blink-182's Mark Hoppus Talks Getting Older, 'After Midnight' -- Exclusive Photos

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 02:20 PM PST

Joseph Llanes for AOL

Blink-182 have made quantum leaps from the goofnugget songs that catapulted them to fame in the late '90s. Following a string of successful and critically acclaimed albums, the band went on indefinite hiatus after releasing their self-titled LP in 2006, a collection of songs that showed the band taking major strides and plumbing emotional depths they'd never before reached.

Seven years later, Blink-182 have reunited and recorded 'Neighborhoods,' their most ambitious album to date. The band takes that darker tone and stadium-reaching weight even further, and the result is the most musically and tonally complex work they have put on tape to date. Bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus spoke to Spinner about getting the band back together and their most recent music video, 'After Midnight.'
As a bonus, check out our exclusive behind-the-scenes photos from the video shoot below.

How did the 'After Midnight' video shoot go down?

We did the band performance section in a hangar that was built in the 1940s to construct blimps inside of. It's the world's largest freestanding wooden structure, so there's an interesting piece of trivia for you. It was just this really cool setting -- the way that they lit it, the way that they shot it. It just had this really industrial yet organic feel to it. It was a good combination of the two because it is obviously a giant superstructure but because it's wooden and because the way that they shot it with water on the ground, everything looked really organic as well.
