Cruise's Checklist on 'M:I' Stunt: Gloves, Altitude... and Supportive Family

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 11:02 AM PST

There's nothing like hobnobbing with superstar Tom Cruise at the Dubai premiere of the fourth "Mission: Impossible" installment "Ghost Protocol." "Extra" correspondent AJ Calloway was there Tuesday for all the action, talking to Cruise about raising the bar on the film's death-defying, building-hangin' stunts.

"You know I was excited to do it because I saw what [director Brad] Bird designed for the sequence," said Cruise, who was game right away. "I went to the guys and we said were going to do it. Somehow we're going to figure this out."

Cruise explained wardrobe and the elements were very important. "What kind of material are we going to have on the gloves, the temperature of the building. Let alone the altitude that we were shooting it at."

But the best part was having his wife, Katie Holmes, and the children with him. "They were there when there was a drop that I had. I feel so lucky to be with her, she's amazing. She knows I'm doing everything possible to make it as safe as possible. If she was worried, she didn't tell me she was worried."

Tom even said daughter Suri may be taking after her dad. "I find her off to the side... she was doing this little obstacle course. She's very athletic, Suri, and I heard her doing the 'Mission' theme."

Make sure to check out all the cool stunts when "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" sweeps into theaters December 21.

Alec Baldwin Removed from Flight for Playing 'Words with Friends'

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 11:04 AM PST

Alec Baldwin declared he's had it with American Airlines after he was escorted off a plane at LAX on Tuesday.

The "30 Rock" star tweeted Tuesday afternoon, "Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving," along with the hashtag, "#nowonderamericaairisbankrupt."

The actor quickly followed that tweet with "#theresalwaysunited," and added, "But, oddly, 30 Rock plays inflight on American."

Baldwin, who managed to get on a later flight with American, arrived to a media firestorm at New York City's JFK, and has since deactivated his Twitter account.

Boxing champ Oscar De La Hoya happened to be on the plane and witnessed what happened, later telling reporters, "I didn't think there was a problem. I actually felt Alec Baldwin was turning off his devices."

Jerry Seinfeld tweeted his support, "No harm done."

Baldwin's publicist released a statement: "Alec was asked to leave the flight for playing 'Words with Friends' while parked at the gate. He loves WWF so much that he was willing to leave a plane for it, but he has already boarded another AA flight."

American is standing by its decision to remove the actor from the flight.

Here are six other celebrities who have also experienced turbulence before takeoff:

1. Gerard Depardieu: The French actor made headlines when he was kicked off of Air France for urinating on the floor of the plane.

2. Whitney Houston: The singer was reportedly too aggressive on a Delta flight and refused to buckle her seatbelt. She was never asked to leave the plane, but took a long time to follow the airline rules and buckle up.

3. John Rich: The country star was escorted off a Southwest plane for reportedly being intoxicated.

4. Billie Joe Armstrong: The lead singer from Green Day was ousted from a Southwest aircraft for refusing to pull up his pants.

5. Leisha Hailey: The "L Word" actress was kicked off a Southwest flight for kissing her girlfriend. Hailey claimed she was discriminated against for kissing a member of the same sex.

6. Josh Duhamel: The "Transformers" actor was asked to leave a plane in NYC after he refused to turn off his BlackBerry.

Remember that scene in 'Trainspotting' where the dead baby was crawling along the ceiling as rave beats thumped away and voices chanted "Lager! Lager! Lager! Lager!"? Makes you think of amateur athletics, right?

Underworld, the duo of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith behind that iconic electronic track 'Born Slippy,' have just been named the musical directors of the 2012 London Olympic Games by their longtime collaborator, 'Trainspotting' director Danny Boyle, who is helming the opening ceremonies. Underworld will be responsible for soundtracking the entire three-hour ceremony next July.

Smith and Hyde have also written music for Boyle's films 'A Life Less Ordinary', 'The Beach' and 'Sunshine' as well as the acclaimed 2010 National Theatre production of 'Frankenstein'.

'What's interesting about working with them is how much broader their taste is than you might imagine," said Boyle in a press release issued Dec. 7 by the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games.

Dan Gilroy to Write The Annihilator for Stan Lee

Dan Gilroy will write The Annhilator based on Stan Lee's new superhero character

Screenwriter Dan Gilroy has signed on to pen The Annihilator (working title) for Magic Storm Entertainment. Eric Mika, the company's CEO, announced today that Gilroy, represented by CAA, would introduce a new Stan Lee superhero of Chinese heritage to global audiences with the company's first film project. Based on an original Stan Lee's POW! Entertainment treatment acquired by Magic Storm Entertainment, the story chronicles a young man who is given a second chance as an international superhero and returns home to mete out justice.

"Words can't express how excited I am about this project. It's based on the most incredibly original and unique superhero I've created in a long time," said Stan Lee. "Best of all, we're excited to be working with a writer as talented as Dan Gilroy to helm the script. I expect the startling saga of our hero, The Annihilator, to become one of the most talked-about and popular franchises for a new generation worldwide!" Stan Lee exclaimed.

Gilroy's most recent international box office success includes Disney's Real Steel, which has grossed over $200 million in domestic and international box office receipts to date. As an established filmmaker of over twenty years, his credits include Universal's Two For the Money, starring wife Rene Russo and Al Pacino, as well as, The Bourne Legacy, currently in production.

"Stan's created a ground-breaking superhero for our globalized world. The story spans cultures and continents in thrilling, character-driven style. Stan is straight-up at the top of his game and it's a joy to have a hand in bringing this to the screen," said Gilroy.

"We could not be more pleased than to have Dan Gilroy come aboard to write this exciting script for our film," said Eric Mika, CEO of Magic Storm Entertainment. "Dan's knowledge and creative mind will undoubtedly create a strong base for a new franchise to the super hero genre world-wide."

Michael Bay Remains Undecided on Directing Transformers 4

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 08:16 AM PST

Michael Bay still unsure about making Transformers 4

Yesterday we reported that director Michael Bay is in "final negotiations" to direct Transformers 4, although that doesn't quite seem to be the case. The filmmaker took to his official message boards early this morning to address the Transformers 4 story. Here's what he had to say below.

"Right now I'm not decided on Transformers 4. Studio's are passing rumors but I'm not sure what I'm doing? I know I'm going to do Pain and Gain early spring but that's it for right now. I'm leaving all my options on the table. I've got several Studio meetings in the next two weeks."

No matter what happens with Transformers 4, Pain and Gain will definitely be the director's next movie, a project he has been developing since 1999. The story is based on a New York Times article about two Florida bodybuilders who get caught up in an extortion and kidnapping scheme. We reported earlier this week that Dwayne Johnson is in talks to star in Pain and Gain, with Mark Wahlberg circling another role.

Transformers 4 comes to theaters in 2014.

Fox Chairman Confims Work Is Moving Ahead On X-MEN: FIRST CLASS 2, DAREDEVIL And FANTASTIC FOUR

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 09:10 AM PST

"We're trying like hell," Fox Chairman Tom Rothman told MTV Splash Page in a recent interview when asked about the status of a sequel to X-Men: First Class. "We're trying as hard as we can. We really want to do it. We're planning to do it." He also made it clear that its success has made the studio reevaluate how they handle comic book movies. "The reason, in addition to those two guys and Matthew Vaughn, that it was as good as it was that the script was really good. The key to making a great continuing franchise is to have a great script, so we're working hard on it." While we already know that David Slade is hard at work on Daredevil, Rothman confirmed that they still hold the rights to the Fantastic Four and the studio are prioritising both of those projects. "'Daredevil' is still with David Slade. It's in

Twilight Review "Twilihate"

Movies that get a lot of unwarranted hate. Expect a lot of bias.

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 06:36 AM PST

I've been lurking around this subreddit for a while because I particularly enjoy everyone's opinions on different movies. A lot of times I was surprised by what you guys like and what you hate. Other times, I'm not surprised at all. One thing that really interests me though is when people seem to hate movies that don't strike me as particularly bad or actually have a favorable critical rating. Usually this is because there is a certain niche regarding these movies that make people hate it for various reasons, which brings me to more specific examples. There are two movies that get A LOT of hate that I actually think are decent: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. gasp

The thing these two movies have in common is that they are new installments in classic franchises that have loyal fanbases who seem to foam at the mouth when it comes to anything new. Mind you, I am a fan of both series yet I actually enjoyed the new installments. At first, I felt like I was the only person who did, but a quick trip to Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes will show that many agree with me. Allow me to give a quick rundown as to why I think these two movies don't deserve the amount of hate that they got upon their releases.

Revenge of the Sith had a lot riding on it. Not only was it the last installment in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, but it was also the final movie in a saga decades in the making. And since it was a prequel, it's presence carried a lot more weight than, say, The Godfather Part III. While I do agree that the movie did have some issues (corny dialogue, Hayden Constipationsen, etc.), most of the flak the movie got was due to it being associated with the prequel trilogy. In case you guys never took a peek at the Star Wars subreddit upon the release of the Blu Rays, Original Trilogy purists can be some kind of monster. Most of the people who hated Episode III have a skewed perception of the prequel movies mainly due to how much of a letdown Episodes I and II were (yes, I admit that I didn't really enjoy them that much either). All anyone really saw were moments like Darth Vader's NOOOOOOOOO and they tend to ignore the film's merits from atop their pedestals. While it wasn't exactly a masterpiece, the writing was vastly improved compared to the prior two episodes, the scenes felt more significant, and the visuals and music added a lot of heart, even more so than Return of the Jedi. Yes, I said it. And if you can't take my word for it, check out Ep III's Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% compared to Ep VI's 79%.

Moving on to Crystal Skull. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull bore the same weight on its shoulders as Star Wars Episode I did with, arguably, the same results. After waiting 20+ years for an Indy sequel, many fans cried foul with the result they got. This phenomenon was made even more infamous in a certain South Park episode. A HUGE criticism of the movie was the involvement of aliens in the plot, as many of you may know by now. Many thought that the series had jumped the shark (or should I say, nuked the fridge YUK YUK YUK) at that point and fans cried foul at the fact that their beloved hero was soiled by a ridiculous plot device. Really now? I guess they were totally fine with the Ark of the Covenant melting off exploding Nazi faces. Or a centuries-old Crusader guarding the Holy Grail from said wacky Nazis. Or Voodoo dolls. And don't even get me started on the shenanigans from the video games. In Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, Indy fights a GODDAMNED KRAKEN and TRAVELS TO THE CHINESE EQUIVALENT OF HELL AND PULLS A MAGIC CRYSTAL BALL OUT OF THE FIRST EMPEROR'S MOUTH. But Aliens? Fucking horse hockey. I was a bit skeptical at first, but after learning that it was Lucas and Spielberg's intention to pay homage to B-movie of the 50s, I became more receptive of the idea. Sure the movie didn't turn out to be as good as any of the original three, but I still thought it was good and it still felt like an Indy movie, albeit with a lot more mileage (HAW). Although, I'll have to concede when it comes to the fridge being nuked. That was goddamned stupid no matter which way you look at it.

So the point I've been trying to make is that sometimes people are convinced that certain movies are terrible for somewhat illogical reasons. Yes, there may be things that didn't click but that doesn't mean you should hate every aspect of a movie just because you didn't like some things. That's downright unfair. I'm not really trying to change anyone's opinion but maybe you should look back at some of these movies and ask yourself if it was truly that bad or if you were just overlooking the good things.

TL;DR Star Wars Episode III and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull don't deserve to be hated as much as they do and if you disagree, then you're simply nitpicking

Well I'm done with my rant so I'll leave it to you guys. What movies do you think get a lot of unwarranted hate? I'd like to hear what Reddit thinks. And I apologize ahead of time if I don't respond. It's 6 AM in the Pacific and I'm about to sleep like a log.

Although the plot of Superman Returns pretty much blew (a kryptonite continent? really? and he just threw it into space?), I actually liked Brandon Routh as a successor to Christopher Reeves, and there were a few key scenes like this one that really drove home that "superman" feel I was looking for.
