Talking to CVG, Rocksteady's Marketing Game Manager Dax Ginn has commented on the chances that we'll see a third Batman game from the studio after the release of Arkham City later this month. The last game was a best-seller, and with the positive buzz surrounding the upcoming sequel, it seems inevitable that we'll get a third one eventually! Here's what he had to say. "Man. That's really tough. I mean I think as long as we're still enjoying it and as long as we feel we can contribute to the Batman universe... That's how it feels. There's some amazing stuff going on with Batman all around the world at the moment and we feel as though we're making our own little contribution in the form of the Arkham-verse. So as long as we've got stories to tell, so long as we feel we can do that and do that really well." "I don't

Chaos Walking Acquired by Lionsgate

Lionsgate has acquired Patrick Ness' Chaos Walking novel series

Lionsgate, a leading global entertainment company, announced today that it has obtained worldwide rights to develop, produce and distribute films based on the award-winning, best-selling and critically acclaimed Chaos Walking young adult novel trilogy by Patrick Ness. The announcement was made by Lionsgate's co-COO and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake. Doug Davison (The Departed, How to Train Your Dragon, The Grudge) will be producing through his Quadrant Pictures.

The Carnegie Medal winning books are set in a dystopian future with humans colonizing a distant earth-like planet. When an infection called the Noise suddenly makes all thought audible, privacy vanishes in an instant. In the ensuing chaos, a corrupt autocrat threatens to take control of the human settlements and wage war with the indigenous alien race, and only young Todd Hewitt holds the key to stopping planet wide-destruction.

"Although these stories are set in a critical time in the future, they speak volumes about what is happening all over the world today, and about the power of young people to challenge the status quo and change the course of our future," said Alli Shearmur, Lionsgate's President of Motion Picture Production and Development, who will be overseeing the production for the studio, with Senior Vice President of Motion Picture Production Jim Miller. "We feel privileged to be bringing these powerful and exquisite books to cinematic life."

Critics have hailed the trilogy, which is published by Candlewick Press in the US and Walker Books in the UK, as "one of the outstanding literary achievements of the present century," (The Irish Times), and described it as "furiously paced, terrifying, exhilarating and heartbreaking," (The Sunday Telegraph). The Guardian's Lucy Mangan recognizes the series' gripping quality and broad appeal, saying "I would press the Chaos Walking trilogy urgently on anyone, anyone at all."

But The Wall Street Journal makes the most apt reference given that the series has found a home at Lionsgate, noting that "With its dark tone, violence, and readerly fanaticism, the book belongs firmly beside Suzanne Collins's work." Lionsgate is also the studio behind The Hunger Games, based on Collins's worldwide bestselling trilogy of the same name.

"A sense of urgency and momentum permeates these stories- it makes the books ones you can't put down, and will make the movies ones you can't miss on the big screen," said Drake of his decision to acquire the adaptation rights. "But apart from the story elements, the world in the stories is so vividly imagined. These are books, much like The Hunger Games, that we feel truly beg to be brought to life on film."

The rights deal was negotiated for the studio by Rob McEntegart, the Motion Picture Group's Senior Executive Vice President, and for the author by his agent Michelle Kass of Michelle Kass Associates in London and attorney Howard Abramson of Behr Abramson in LA. Robert M. Melnik, Executive Vice President of Business Affairs for Lionsgate, negotiated Davison's producer deal with attorney Rick Genow.

Trilogy Awards and Accolades

The Chaos Walking trilogy has sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide and won numerous medals and honors in the US and the UK, where Ness - an American citizen - lives. They've won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, the James Tiptree Junior Award, the Costa Children's Book Prize, been named on Amazon.com and Publisher's Weekly's lists of the Best Books of the Year, and all three titles have been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, with "Monsters of Men," the final volume, winning in June 2011. The Carnegie Medal is a particular distinction with past winners including "Watership Down," by Richard Adams, "The Golden Compass," by Philip Pullman, and "The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Last Battle," by C.S. Lewis. marks the first time in history that every entry in a trilogy has either won or been shortlisted for the prestigious honor.

Book Synopses

The Knife of Never Letting Go

Todd Hewitt is the last boy in Prentisstown. But Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in a constant, overwhelming, never-ending Noise. There is no privacy. There are no secrets. Or are there? Just one month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd unexpectedly stumbles upon a spot of complete silence. Which is impossible. Prentisstown has been lying to him. And now he's going to have to run.

The Ask and The Answer

Fleeing before a relentless army, Todd has carried a desperately wounded Viola right into the hands of their worst enemy, Mayor Prentiss. Immediately separated from Viola and imprisoned, Todd is forced to learn the ways of the Mayor's new order. But what secrets are hiding just outside of town? And where is Viola? Is she even still alive? And who are the mysterious Answer? And then, one day, the bombs begin to explode . . .

Monsters of Men

Three armies march on New Prentisstown, each one intent on destroying the others. Todd and Viola are caught in the middle, with no chance of escape. As the battles commence, how can they hope to stop the fighting? How can there ever be peace when they're so hopelessly outnumbered? And if war makes monsters of men, what terrible choices await? But then a third voice breaks into the battle, one bent on revenge.

Dr. Conrad Murray Nails It After Trying Week

Posted: 03 Oct 2011 10:10 AM PDT

There's nothing like a good foot scrubbing to help you forget you're on trial for involuntary manslaughter.

dr.conrad-murray.jpg

After a stressful week in court, Dr. Conrad Murray went for a spa pedicure over the weekend at an L.A. nail salon, reports RadarOnline. The Houston-based doc reportedly tipped the worker $5, before slipping out through the back of the shop.

The trial continues today, with prosecutors expected to resume questioning Dr. Richelle Cooper, the ER doctor who officially pronounced Jackson's death on June 25, 2009. While on the stand, Cooper revealed, "My assessment when he arrived is that he was clinically dead."

Last Week's Trial

The ER doc recalled Michael's kids were with him at the hospital. "They were crying and rather hysterical and being comforted by someone who was described to me as their nurse."

Cooper previously testified that Murray never disclosed the fact that Jackson was using the prescription drug propofol -- the powerful anesthetic that ultimately killed the pop king.

Other witnesses slated to take the stand are the LAPD homicide detectives who worked on the case, as well as Sade Anding, one of Murray's girlfriends -- who was on the phone with him when he realized MJ was in trouble. Murray dropped the phone, and Sade, who was in Houston at the time, heard the chaos erupt in the room.

If convicted, Murray faces up to four years in prison and could lose his medical license.

EXCLUSIVE: Yasmin Paige Talks Submarine

Posted: 03 Oct 2011 09:46 AM PDT

Yasmin Paige talks Submarine

Actress Yasmin Paige talks Submarine, working with the cast and director Richard Ayoade, and more.

Yasmin Paige certainly seems to be an actress we'll be hearing quite a lot more from after her performance in Submarine, which hits Blu-ray and DVD October 4. The actress plays Jordana Bevan in this coming-of-age comedy from director Richard Ayoade, a young girl whom Craig Roberts' character Oliver takes a liking to. He attempts to lose his virginity to Jordana while simultaneously trying to mend his parents' ow relationship, often in bizarre ways.

I recently had the chance to speak with Yasmin Paige about her role in Submarine. Here's what she had to say below.

Could you talk about your initial thoughts on the script and your first meetings with (writer-director) Richard Ayoade? This must have been quite an interesting script to read.

Yasmin Paige: Yeah, definitely. When I first read it, I thought it was really great and I just wanted a chance to be a part of it. It was really funny and I remember thinking I don't think I've read this kind of humor before. I sent in a tape in like May of 2009 and I didn't meet Richard until late August. We just had a chat and he tried to get me to improvise, which I'm awful at and I didn't want to do that (Laughs). We just had a really nice chat, and after that we did a screen test with Craig. It happened really quickly. I was so shocked at how quickly it happened.

Was Craig already signed on when you first read for this?

Yasmin Paige: I don't think so. When we met at the screen test, we didn't know what was going on. It was a lot of fun. We did it over three days. We kind of shot a mini-version of the film, but without dialogue. It was really weird, but it was great. I don't think Craig had signed on at that point, but we were just auditioning together.

We've seen a few movies like this before, about these teens going through these different relationships. Do you feel this was more honest and truthful to how teens today are actually feeling?

Yasmin Paige: Yeah. It's a very pure account of teenage adolescence, I think. It's very romantic, but I think it is a true account. It's also very idealized as well. I wish my first crush was like that (Laughs).

Was there any kind of preparation you needed to go through for a role like this? Did you look at friends of yours or anyone else to play Jordana, or was it a more natural approach?

Yasmin Paige: Well, Richard gave us different people to look at. He gave me a lot of Christina Ricci films. She is very good at being mean, so I watched a lot of her, Buffalo 66, The Ice Storm, The Opposite of Sex, stuff like that. She's amazing and I just wanted to get that meanness that she has, that nonchalant coolness as well.

There is such a great cast here, with younger actors like yourself and Craig and then veterans like Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine. Can you talk about the overall feeling on the set, and what it was like to get a chance to work with seasoned pros like this?

Yasmin Paige: It was really relaxed and really fun. It was really like a family, especially the last two weeks of filming. It was extremely small. We used to do days where it would be just me, Craig, Richard, and the DP. We just went out with the camera. It was a lot of fun. Paddy is hilarious and it was really a wonderful experience. It just felt like a family, and you felt really safe to ask questions. It was really great.

Did you have a lot of time before shooting to get to know Craig and build a rapport with him?

Yasmin Paige: No, we had a really long rehearsal period. Craig and I hung out a lot, and we hung out a lot with Richard as well. We would watch films together and get to know each other when we were in Wales shooting it. It's great that we had that kind of bond with each other. It was really, really lovely.

Can you talk about working with Richard? As an actor himself, do you find that helps his relationships with the actors?

Yasmin Paige: Yeah, I think it helps a lot. Richard is so kind and he understands. I think that he was always sensitive to us feeling comfortable and he was so lovely. He made it really easy. He was wonderful.

This was based on a novel, and I know people have different approaches. Some don't read the novel and some do. Did you delve into the novel before shooting, or did you just go off of Richard's script?

Yasmin Paige: Well, Richard said there is a lot of similar things with the book, dialogue and things like that, but there are also huge differences as well. I loved it and I read it beforehand. It really made it that much more enticing, because the book is extremely different and they both stand on their own right. It was really, really good.

It's cool to see an adaptation where, even though it's very different, fans of the book can enjoy it as well.

Yasmin Paige: Yeah. I think Submarine is one of those films where you can watch the film and then read the book. I think for Twilight and things like that, you can do that. You will just see Craig when you're reading the book (Laughs). But they're both just wonderful in their own right. They complement each other and yet both stand on their own.

Is there a specific scene or a moment on the set that will always stick out for you when you look back on your experience in Submarine?

Yasmin Paige: There were so many things. I think one thing that stuck out was when we shot the scene where I was rollerblading with these fireworks in my hand. Maybe that's because I fell and hurt myself, but that stuff was really, really fun. We were just running on the beach and climbing in trees and things like that.

Is there anything you're looking to sign on for now that you can talk about? Does the experience of doing something like this really open new doors for you, after the movie's release?

Yasmin Paige: I'm at school at the moment, but yeah. I think Submarine is one of those things where the experiences at the festivals were so amazing and mind-blowing. It was a completely different experience than I've ever had before. The fact that people liked it was also great. When we filmed it, we couldn't imagine the outcome of just how wonderful it is. It will be something that's very dear to me, the whole experience.

After an experience like this, do you find yourself gravitating to more smaller, indie films?

Yasmin Paige: Well, Submarine is one of the only things I can draw from. I don't really know the difference between studio films and indie films are. I wouldn't know if there is a huge difference. I certainly would love to have the same experience I had here, but I don't think it would ever be the same.

What would you like to say to anyone who didn't see Submarine in theaters about why they should pick up the DVD or Blu-ray next week?

Yasmin Paige: Because it's really good (Laughs). The cinematography is really, really good. I think I've said that in every interview, but it really, really is. Whichever TV you have, it will still look amazing.

Great. Thanks so much for your time, Yasmin. It was a pleasure to talk to you.

Yasmin Paige: Thank you very much. It was lovely talking to you too.

You can watch Yasmin Paige in Submarine, which hits the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD October 4.

Universal Soldier returning as a Fremantle Media TV series

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), the commercial and brand extension arm of FremantleMedia, today announced it has acquired the rights to Universal Soldier, the hit movie franchise, rebooting it as a major new global television property. It will be written by Damian Kindler (Stargate SG-1, Sanctuary) and produced by FremantleMedia North America.

David Ellender, Global CEO, FremantleMedia Enterprises, said: "Universal Soldier is FME's first foray into the sci-fi action genre, further diversifying our growing drama portfolio and underlining our reputation as one of the industry's leading developers, co-producers and distributors of globally popular, high-quality scripted content."

Allen Shapiro and Craig Baumgarten, who will executive produce the series, said: "We've long wanted to come up with a bold new way of updating Universal Soldier. We're thrilled to team up with FremantleMedia and are sure that the millions of fans who loved the movie will now welcome it into their living rooms."

FremantleMedia Enterprises, which acquired the rights to Universal Soldier from The IndieProd Company and Craig Baumgarten, will now take the project to international buyers.

Allen Shapiro is Chairman of TV Guide Network and TVGuide.com, which are part of a joint venture of Lionsgate, the leading next generation studio. He was also a Founder and President of Mosaic Media Group, a talent management, production and investment company. He previously served as President / CEO of The IndieProd Company, which produced numerous films and TV shows, including Universal Soldier, Air America, Blue Streak, L.A. Story and Roxanne.

Craig Baumgarten is a highly successful independent producer, whose films include Hook, Shattered Glass, The Order, Never Back Down and Universal Soldier. Prior to forming his own production company, he served as Vice President of Paramount Pictures, Executive Vice President of Columbia Pictures, a President at Lorimar and Executive Vice President at Twentieth Century Fox pictures. Some of the films he supervised during this period were the hits 9 Weeks, The Karate Kid, St. Elmo's Fire, The Abyss and Endless Love. Among his TV credits is the multi award-winning production of A Streetcar Named Desire; the highly-acclaimed CBS series Michael Hayes, starring David Caruso; and TNT's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, starring Salma Hayek and Richard Harris.

In related news, Fremantle Media also acquired the rights to Blood & Treasure from National Treasure screenwriter Charles Segars. Here's the full press release below.

From Charles Segars, the creator and executive producer of Hollywood blockbusters National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets, FremantleMedia North America and Landscape Entertainment (Medical Investigation, John Tucker Must Die) comes Blood & Treasure (working title), a rollercoaster one-hour law-enforcement drama-series that follows two brothers as they travel the world, solving crimes and unearthing some of history's greatest secrets. With a 'bible' and first episode written by Rob Wright (Law & Order, Crossing Jordan, Drop Dead Diva), Blood & Treasure weaves its episodic cases around actual historical events. Blood & Treasure - which FremantleMedia Enterprises will now be taking to international buyers - forms part of FME's on-going first-look deal with Landscape Entertainment. It is produced by Landscape Entertainment, Charles Segars and FremantleMedia North America.

David Ellender, Global CEO, FremantleMedia Enterprises, said: "The stellar team behind Blood & Treasure have created a gripping world of adventure and intrigue that will really resonate with international buyers and global audiences. Take Charles' vision for National Treasure, Bob's background in international co-production and cable TV and FME's growing reputation for funding, packaging and distributing outstanding scripted content, and you have a hugely exciting proposition. Rob has written a rich compelling story that we feel is going to grip audiences the world over."

Bob Cooper, Chairman of Landscape Entertainment, said: "This is the project we've been looking for ever since Landscape Entertainment first signed with FremantleMedia - a sharply written, energetic drama series that takes the talents of feature filmmakers and allows them to run riot on the small screen, entertaining and engaging audiences all over the world."

Jeff Mangum and Public Enemy a Study in Contrasts at All Tomorrow's Parties

Jason Persse for AOL

This year's All Tomorrow's Parties was subtitled 'I'll Be Your Mirror,' and on Sunday (Oct. 2), as the three-day festival came to a close, two of the marquee performers seemed like fun-house reflections of each other. One is shy and sensitive, the other brash and unapologetic. One writes aching, abstract songs, the other political tirades. One keeps out of the public eye. The other fronts Public Enemy.

Only ATP, held this year in Asbury Park, N.J., could bring together beloved indie recluse Jeff Mangum -- who released two Neutral Milk Hotel albums in the '90s and then vanished into thin air -- and Chuck D, the rabble-rousing hip-hop icon who arrived on the scene in the '80s and hasn't stopped talking since. Hats off to Portishead, who curated the event, for achieving such a juxtaposition.

Mangum headlined Friday, ATP's opening night, so when he took the stage at the Paramount Theater on Sunday, there wasn't quite the same level of anticipation there had been 48 hours earlier. Still, fans were visibly awestruck, and at first, no one spoke, as if engaging Mangum would send him scurrying back into his secret hiding place. After opener 'Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2,' the singer and guitarist broke the silence.
