Rhys Ifans Talks The Amazing Spider-Man

Rhys Ifans talks The Amazing Spider-Man and Anonymous

Rhys Ifans will next be seen in Anonymous, hitting theaters October 28, but the actor will make a big splash as Dr. Curt Connors in The Amazing Spider-Man, which debuts July 3, 2012. Rhys Ifans recently spoke about his work in both movies, contrasting his small role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 to his much larger villain role in The Amazing Spider-Man.

Here's what he had to say below, where he also compared the styles of Anonymous director Roland Emmerich, and The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb.

"I dipped my toe into Harry Potter, but I put my whole body into Spider-Man It was a thrill to work with Marc Webb. He's like Roland Emmerich. He's doing blockbusters, but he has an 'indie' heart, an indie character-oriented sensibility. That was a very telling thing on the set. We knew it would be action-packed and epic and all that. But Marc made sure that the human dynamic was paramount, and that's going to elevate the film possibly to a place that the other [Spider-Man] films got to."

The actor also talked about Anonymous, and how director Roland Emmerich fully realized London in this period setting.

"Often period films have budgets that keep us from seeing London in full. There are several helicopter-like shots which Roland, the master of CGI, made sure our film has. It liberates the film to see that. I really got a sense of London, a very old city that becomes a character in the film, as it was in Elizabethan times. Roland does paint with a big brush. But what separates him from blockbuster film contemporaries is his attention to the emotional dynamics between characters. It's forensic. Very detailed. In his films, the strand you see running across these huge canvases, through these huge universes he creates is that they're populated by very real human relationships. That's the ace in his deck of cards."

Anonymous comes to theaters October 28th, 2011 and stars Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewlis, Edward Hogg, Julian Bleach, Tony Way, Robert Emms. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich.

The Amazing Spider-Man comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Irrfan Khan, C. Thomas Howell. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

Captain America: The First Avenger is less than a week away from being released in the US (the UK will have to wait until December 5th!) but will you buy it come October 25th? And if you're interested in seeing the design of the case and discs, here's a few photos of my copy which arrived earlier this week. Total Recall (1990): What really happened

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 11:11 AM PDT

So my dad used to love this film, I watched it with him a lot when I was younger. Lately I've been watching it a lot myself, and I finally found conclusive evidence as to what really happened in the film.

There are two major possibilities presented - which one "really" happened seems left up to the viewer to decide. The moviemakers give us many clues, however.

As I see it there are two main possibilities presented:

  1. Quaid is really a secret agent, the unfolding story (everything in it), is really happening.
  2. Quaid is not an agent, we see his real life up until he visits Recall, after which we see parts of his mental breakdown as his memory implant procedure goes awry. The unfolding events afterwards are part of his experience of getting lost in his mental dream/fantasy world. The doctor who visits him in the dream (bald guy), along with all the other mentions of his Recall trip, are part of his own genuine recollection of visiting Recall in his real life, mixed into his ongoing lucid dream/fantasy taking place in his head. At the end of the film, just as his fantasy dream is ending, he is finally lobotomized back in reality by the people at Recall.

I always took #1 to be the reality of what happened, but now I see that #2 must be what happened, as I will point out shortly (unless the filmmakers didn't really care either way and were just messing with us, which is possible).

Most of the evidence in the film supports theory #1, actually:

  1. We see things happening in the movie which would not be available to Quaid were he in a dream. In a dream, typically, we only see and experience things happening directly to us. Not things like Rictor's conversations with other characters. However this is not definite evidence since part of his dream could have been "experiencing" the knowledge of this backstory, as part of his fantasy.

  2. The Recall female Dr.'s explanation after he flips out and is tranquilized. It seems unlikely this would have been part of a dream for him, since he's asleep. However, again, it could be part of his "internal" lucid monologue to explain the forthcoming events.

  3. Clues about the setup: the sweat on the doctor's brow, the fitting in of his visit to Recall as part of the entire plot

  4. etc. etc. (plenty more)

However, this is the piece of evidence I never really paid attention to until today, which finally sealed the conclusion for me (sadly) that the reality is actually #2, not #1, as profusely suggested above:

When Quaid first visits Recall in the film, he begins describing his ideal woman for his implant. As the camera pans away from the screen, we see the 3D mannequin face morph into the exact image of Malina.

Here's the problem:

If #1 were true, then he was already a secret agent, with subconscious partially-deleted memories of Malina, and was describing her to these technicians, who knew nothing about his real life. But if that were the case, there is no way their computer model would have perfectly matched Malina's real face. It would have been just some random athletic brunette.

We know #2 is true, because in his visit to recall, we see the exact image of Malina generated by the computer system preparing the implant, which is then how she appears in the rest of the film.

In the special edition DVD commentary, however, the writers and directors seem to make it clear that they are making this an open-ended puzzle, and there is some sense in their explanation that #1 is the reality and they are simply introducing the #2 possibility as a tease for the viewer.

It's quite possible that they simply were having fun with the filmmaking process... and not taking this as seriously as I am right now. :P

But I think the Malina clue makes it impossible, if you want to be strict about it, that Douglas Quaid is really a secret agent.

Also, during the film they use the same soft "dream" jingle in the soundtrack every time it's associated with dreaming. Before the final credits we hear that same jingle as he kisses Malina. And the sun bursts out and everything fades to white as his brain is scrambled back in reality.

I'd love to hear any opinions from any other fans of this film, however. Cheers~

TL;DR: I spent too much time analyzing this film. But I believe the Malina clue at the visit to Recall is definitive evidence that the rest of the story is a dream, not real.

EDIT: fixed some wording

Rooney Mara's Transformation into Lisbeth for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 10:33 AM PDT

Rooney Mara had a hard time convincing Director David Fincher that she was right for the role. But mentally she had want he needed. As Rooney told Vogue, "I've always been sort of a loner. I didn't play team sports. I am better one-on-one than in big groups. I can understand wanting to be invisible and mistrusting people and wanting to understand everything before you engage with the world." After numerous callbacks Fincher finally started to embrace Rooney as his number one choice. Rooney was lovable but also strange. Fincher embraced Rooney's strangeness saying, "She's a weirdo. She's a great weird." Rooney Mara who looked sweet and beautiful in Fincher's The Social Network, but she had to go through a tremendous physical transformation to become the alien like creature Fincher wanted. And so began an agonizing period for Mara. "It was like, 'Come in. We need you to do this, we need you to

The Late Lindsay Lohan Shows Up at Morgue

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 11:31 AM PDT

Actress Lindsay Lohan isn't making any new friends at the L.A. Country Morgue.

The starlet was supposed to begin her court-appointed community service at 8:00 AM Thursday, but didn't arrive until 8:40. The Coroner's officials met her at the door and turned her away, reports TMZ.

The Coroner's office contacted the Probation Dept.'s Volunteer Center -- which supervises Lindsay's probation -- and notified them that she was late.

Lohan's publicist claimed she was late "due to a combination of not knowing the entrance to go through and confusion caused by the media waiting for her arrival."

"The Mean Girls" star tweeted, "With all of the stress and pressure from yesterday and today, I've never been so happy to go to therapy. Also, I'm sorry for the confusion that I may of (sic) caused to those at the Coroner's office. Won't happen again, now I know where to go!"

Lindsay appeared in court Wednesday and had her probation revoked by the judge for failure to comply with her community service schedule determined by the court. Lohan was handcuffed and taken to jail, but is currently out on $100K bail.

Lilo's recent tardiness at the morgue, however, is not a violation of her probation. The judge only required that Lohan put in 16 hours at the morgue by November 2, when she will be back in court for her sentencing.

Lohan faces up to a year and a half in jail, although the judge explained that new laws and overcrowding would make jail time unlikely.

Widow Chronicles Madoff Son's Suicide in 'The End of Normal'

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 10:58 AM PDT

Mark Madoff, son of Ponzi scheme mastermind Bernard Madoff, committed suicide on the second anniversary of his father's arrest, and now, Mark's widow, Stephanie Madoff Mack, opens up about the torment her husband experienced.

mark-madoff.jpg

In the book, "The End of Normal: A Wife's Anguish, A Widow's New Life," Stephanie recounts the last two years of Mark's tormented life over the notorious deceit that wiped out thousands of investors.

"There are people who never knew Mark Madoff, yet who gleefully point to his suicide as proof that he must have known of or participated in his father's epic crime," Madoff Mack wrote. "Nothing could be further from the truth. His death was proof of his pain."

Stephanie, who says she added Mack to her last name in order to deflect some of the negativity associated with the Madoff surname. "I wish I could have changed my birthday as well. I share the same date with Bernie."

bernie-madoff.jpg

She also addressed the bitterness she felt toward her disgraced father-in-law, writing, "I hated Bernie thoroughly and deeply from the instant Mark told me what he had done."

Bernie, 73, was arrested on December 11, 2008, the morning after his two sons notified authorities that he had confessed to them about the multi-billion dollar scandal. In 2009, Madoff, a former NASDAQ chairman, pleaded guilty to securities fraud among other charges, and was sentenced to 150 years in prison.

Before his death, Mark became obsessed with the news coverage surrounding his father's crime and attempted to kill himself by taking sleeping pills. His suicide note read: "Bernie: Now you know how you have destroyed the lives of your sons by your life of deceit."

Mark, 46, was sent to the hospital and recovered, but 14 months later, was found hanging in his NYC SoHo loft. Before he died, Mark texted his wife (who was away at Disney World), "Please send someone to take care of Nick (their son)."
