EXCLUSIVE: Jake Kasdan Talks New Girl Season 1

Jake Kasdan Talks Zooey Deschanel and New Girl

Fox has a bonafide hit on its hands with this Fall season's comedy New Girl, from creator Elizabeth Meriwether. Zooey Deschanel has found the role of a lifetime playing newly single Jess, an eccentric (to say the least), newly single woman that decides to move into an apartment with three men she doesn't know. We recently caught up with director Jake Kasdan, long time friend of Zooey Deschanel, who also happens to producer her new show and helmed the pilot. We chatted about New Girl, which returns with Episode 1.05: Naked next Tuesday, October 25th.

Here is our conversation.

How happy have you been with the response New Girl is getting?

Jake Kasdan: Delighted. It has been this incredibly cool thing. We are deep in the mist of making it right now. It's been cool, we keep going and we try to make it good.

How worried were you guys about losing Damon Waynes Jr. after that first episode? He's so good in the pilot. I didn't want to like the new guy. It took me until the third episode to warm up to him. That's a pretty powerful thing to do with just a pilot. But I like him now. I think Lamorne Morris is a good fit.

Jake Kasdan: Yeah. We were really sad to lose Damon Wayans Jr., but we were also very relieved that Lamorne Morris was around, and that he was available. He had been someone that we'd seriously talked to about the part when we were doing the pilot. Then he got another job. We ended up finding Damon Wayans Jr.. That ended up working out great. Then, when Damon was no longer available, which was a surprise to us that it worked out that way, we were grateful to have someone so great that could step in. It was a story challenge in how to introduce a new character in just the second episode. Without complicating the premise. We did our best. So far, people seem to be sticking with it. Hopefully they will continue to watch.

Both you and Zooey have fathers that are quite well established in the movie business. Did you two know each other since you were kids?

Jake Kasdan: I've known her since she was a teenager. I am a little older than her. But I have known her for a long time, yeah. I'd always wanted to work with her. I'd tried to find stuff to work on with her before. This was the natural, perfect part for her. Elizabeth Meriwether called me up and asked if I'd direct the pilot. In that same couple of days, we thought the first thing we should do is get Zooey Deschanel to play this part. We were just excited that she wanted to.

Does that make it easier for you, when you already have that long standing relationship with someone, and you set out to take on a new project with them?

Jake Kasdan: Yeah. It is, a little. Its great to have a relationship like that. And to be able to turn it into something. Maybe, the fact that we did know each other, and we'd been trying to work together for along time...I like to think that helped bring her into this. Primarily, she fell in love with the role. I was there telling her that it would be everything she hoped it could be. And that I was going to do everything I could to do that with her.

I think, right now, Zooey might be the funniest girl on TV. She certainly is giving Kaitlin Olson a run for her money...

Jake Kasdan: That is nice to hear. She is amazing. We have some really fantastic episodes coming up that we are really excited about, and proud of. It's a unique thing. Here is an actress that really inspires the writers. She sets the tone for the whole thing, and she gets it all going.

Do you have a lot of story input as you guys build towards that season ending arc?

Jake Kasdan: You know, I am in the conversations with them. I am not writing the show. But I am around, helping them produce the first couple of episodes.

It almost seems as though Jess is going to hook up with the Nick Miller character. But you keep turning that convention on its head. Are you going to keep Zooey from hooking up with anyone in the house for a while?

Jake Kasdan: People are going to have to keep watching to find out what happens with those two. They have great chemistry, and we love writing for them. They are both seeing other people in the upcoming episodes.

Three's Company was on the air for almost ten years. Jack never got with any of the girls.

Jake Kasdan: (Laughs) Exactly. There is a long, great tradition of people not hooking up on television.

Jerry Bruckheimer Breaks Silence On The Lone Ranger

Posted: 19 Oct 2011 08:08 AM PDT

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter Jerry Bruckheimer talks about the production trouble with The Lone Ranger and Disney. He speaks about what led to production being shut down, the shock of the shut down itself, what's been cut from the script and the new release date for the movie. How did negotiations get to the point where Disney shut down the movie? We had a script that we kept working on. It was evolving. You start looking at locations, you look at the menu and say: "I like all these desserts. I want 'em all." And you hit a number and they say, "We can't afford that." Then you start cutting it back. Disney wanted to stop the spending unless they felt the budget corresponded to the number that the boss [Iger] wanted. They had set a deadline [Aug. 12] for us to submit a budget, and we didn't hit

Lindsay Lohan Cuffed, Sent to Jail after Probation Hearing

Posted: 19 Oct 2011 11:14 AM PDT

Lindsay Lohan appeared in court today to face no-nonsense Judge Stephanie Sautner, who was clearly peeved that Lohan had been terminated from her court-ordered community service at L.A.'s Downtown Women's Shelter.

After much back and forth from between Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley and Judge Sautner regarding Lindsay's community service progress, the Sautner ordered Lohan be taken to jail for probation violation.

lindsay-lohan-a.jpg

The judge made it clear she was not going to accept Lohan's community service hours completed at the Red Cross, pointing out it was never approved. Lindsay was kicked out of the women's shelter program after failing to show up 9 times.

Holley claimed Lohan had alerted the shelter that she needed to travel overseas in order to earn an income and support herself and her family. Upon the star's return, Holley informed the judge that Lindsay was genuinely surprised at her termination.

Judge Sautner questioned whether the actress had appeared in-person to her psychologist each week, when it was noted she had traveled to Europe and New York.

At the end of the hearing, the judge revoked Lindsay's probation and set another court date for November 2, before Lohan was cuffed and taken into custody.

Lohan faces up to a year and a half in jail, although the judge explained that new laws and overcrowding would make jail time unlikely.

Lindsay Lohan's Courtroom Attire

Once again arriving in style to court today, Lindsay Lohan opted for a more conservative look with navy slacks from Lanvin (vintage), her top from Wolford, accessorized with a scarf and Fendi bag. The actress showed up for a preliminary hearing to determine if there's enough evidence to put her on trial for felony theft regarding the necklace Lindsay allegedly stole from Kamofie and Co.

Lindsay Lohan topped her last courtroom number in this body-hugging Raquel Allegra nude dress, Chanel shoes, Christian Dior shades, and some jewelry loaned (loaned!) by Judith Ripka.

Perhaps the best-known and most controversial outfit Lohan wore was her skintight, seductive white dress. The 24-year-old was in court for a felony grand theft arraignment concerning the necklace she reportedly stole.

About to enter the courtroom again for violating her probation, the actress chose an easygoing look and opted for jeans and a black blazer over a v-neck shirt.

Taylor Armstrong's Mission: 'It's My Goal to Help Other Women'

"Beverly Hills" Housewife Taylor Armstrong survived a devastating year with her husband Russell Armstrong's suicide, abusive marriage and financial trouble.

Armstrong, who kept the spousal abuse, detailed in various appearances and publications, a secret is speaking out at The Grove with "Extra's" Maria Menounos about domestic violence.

The reality star said, "It's embarrassing to have to admit that I didn't have the strength to get out, but thankfully through all my friends and my support group, I was finally able to leave, obviously, and now I feel as though it's my mission and my goal to go out and help other women."

Taylor opened up about her 5-year-old daughter, Kennedy, revealing, "She saw a lot of things and that was the reason I left. It's my job to break the cycle. I was a child who experienced domestic violence in my home, and then to allow that to happen to my daughter... I'm terribly ashamed of that."

Armstrong, 40, is rumored to be dating reality TV star Matt Nordgren. Taylor set the record straight, saying, "No, no, no... that's just a rumor." She added, "Someday if someone comes along who is a good guy, then I'll consider it."

In the meantime, Armstrong is hosting a fashion show to benefit the W.I.N. (Women in Need) Foundation for victims of domestic violence. For more information about the foundation, click here.

Dovolani was also with Kressley, who joked with the pro dancer about his crush on Maks Chmerkovskiy. When asked what he was going to do now, Kressley quipped, "I'll probably spoon and cuddle with Maks 'cause he's pretty shaken by this."

What could this mean? Are the Fantastic Four planning on killing Galactus, or is that they just don't think they can if they have to? Of course, the classic villain played a big role in the "death" of Johnny Storm, a.k.a. The Human Torch. (who many believe will return in Fantastic Four #600) Regardless, this is now the third teaser released by Marvel this week, so I'm guessing that we can expect another both tomorrow and Friday.

RUMOR: 8 Minute TDKR Prologue With Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

I'm sure you remember back in 2007 we got to see the opening sequence of The Dark Knight in IMAX theaters in front of I Am Legend. Well according to /Film we may be in for a similar treat.. A trusted theater (read: exhibitor) source has just exclusively alerted /Film that Warner Bros. plans to attach an eight minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises to all IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. TDKR and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol are being released by different studios-WB and Paramount-but /Film reckon since WB don't have a big movie opening in IMAX to feature the footage with, they are teaming up with Paramount as Brad Bird is also shooting extensive scenes in IMAX for his action flick. Apparently WB have declined to comment so for now it's just a rumor I'm afraid. Lets hope it turns out to be true. If it
