VIDEO GAMES: Transformers: War for Cybertron Sequel Announced

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 11:03 AM PDT

The geniuses behind last year's hit game Transformers: War For Cybertron, High Moon Studios, has announced a sequel to said game. It will be titled Fall of Cybertron. According to Game Informer, the game will continue the story of War For Cybertron, but is "a natural successor rather than a true sequel" since it "changes and improves upon so many of the fundamental ideas." Not much details has been released. High Moon Studios wants to establish a "darker tone" for it. Look for more details in the November issue of Game Informer. Destroyer14: This will probably bridge the gap between War for Cybertron and Prime. (The cartoon currently airing on the Hub.) It'll probably explain why Bumblebee can't talk, among other things.

New Orleans rockers Mutemath aren't quitting anytime soon. After the departure of guitarist Greg Hill, the band soldiered on and soon developed an aggressive sound with 'Odd Soul,' a fierce combination of power pop and indie grit.

Mutemath's newest video 'Blood Pressure' is a spazoid, stop-motion trip directed by the band's own Darren King. Spinner caught up with the drummer to talk about the video and how the put together such a complex project.

Where did the idea for this video come from?

I had done a couple of videos already that were very heavily edited and had little ideas from each of those. We didn't plan out the video until the hour prior to shooting. We were in L.A. doing a show and then press at Warner Brothers and realized we wouldn't have another chance to be all together until the tour so we just decided to throw caution to the wind. A lot of the ideas were improvised with the hope that they would work once edited together.

10 Interesting Facts About Steve Jobs

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 11:22 AM PDT

Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the man behind the first personal computer, died Wednesday at 56 after a long battle with cancer. The innovative genius revolutionized the technical world with the iMac, iTunes, iPod and iPhone. "Extra" remembers Jobs and all of his world-changing accomplishments. Here are "10 Interesting Facts About Steve Jobs."

10 Interesting Facts About Steve Jobs

Born in San Francisco

Apple guru Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco and was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs. The Jobs family later adopted a daughter, Patti.

Steve's Ethnic Background

Steve Jobs' biological father, Abdulfattah John Jandali, was of Syrian descent, and his biological mother, Joanne Schieble (later Simpson), was of German ancestry. Jandai is a political science professor and Schieble a language pathologist. Steve never met his biological dad — who had previously expressed a desire to see his genius son.

First Daughter, Lisa

Jobs' relationship with Bay Area painter Chrisann Brennan yielded his first daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, born in 1978. Steve initially denied he was the father, claiming he was sterile. The Apple CEO later acknowledged Lisa as his daughter, even naming the Lisa computer (the "Apple III") after his first-born.

Brilliance Runs in the Family

Steve's biological sister, Mona Simpson, is the famous author who penned, "Anywhere But Here" — a novel about Simpson's relationship with her folks. Jobs, who looked for Mona in the '90s, did not meet his sibling until he was an adult. It was reported that Steve learned a lot about his biological parents through his sister.

Something's Fishy

The Apple chairman was a pescetarian, meaning, he did not eat meat, only fish. His diet also included eggs and dairy.

A Little Company Called Pixar

In 1986, Steve bought The Graphics Group (later renamed Pixar) from Lucasfilm's graphics division for $10 million. Jobs almost went broke with the giant purchase, after years of unsuccessfully trying to sell the Pixar Image Computer. The company struck gold when it partnered with Disney to produce some of the most memorable computer animated films, including "Toy Story," "Monsters," "A Bug's Life" and "Cars."

Religion

Steve was a Zen Buddhist and once thought about joining a monastery. Jobs' wedding to wife Laurene Powell was officiated by Zen Buddhist monk Kobun Chino Otogawa.

Charity Schmarity

When Jobs resumed control as Apple's CEO in 1997, he stopped all of its philanthropic programs, saying, "Wait until we are profitable." Even after rising to the top to become a $40-billion company, Apple still doesn't donate to charity.

Tough Boss

Fortune magazine once wrote that Jobs was "considered one of Silicon Valley's leading egomaniacs." The tough and demanding Apple boss was known for his aggressive personality and erratic management style. Jobs made Fortune's list of America's Toughest Bosses in 1993.

Wealth

As the CEO of Apple, Steve earned $1 a year. However, he held on to 5 million Apple shares and 138 million shares in Disney. In 2010, Forbes estimated his net wealth to be $8.3 billion, making him one of the richest people in the world.

George Clooney on Skinny Dipping and Adopting Sandra Bullock

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 11:15 AM PDT

Actor George Clooney cracked wise with "Extra" correspondent AJ Calloway at the NYC premiere of "The Ides of March," joking about the rumored swimming with the cast in Lake Como -- sans clothes -- and about making Sandra Bullock part of his family.

"Yes, I'm going to adopt Sandy," laughed Clooney, responding to recent pics of him and Bullock with baby Louis in London. "That's what I'm doing."

As for the alleged skinny-dipping at his Italian villa, where stars of the political drama took some time off together, Clooney said it didn't exactly happen that way. "They weren't fully naked, which is unfortunate, but there were people jumping in."

Photos! At "The Ides of March" Premiere

Clooney's "Ides" co-star, Evan Rachel Wood, admitted she swam in her underwear. "I mean, you know, I was in my skivvies. But I cannot speak for other people that were there."

Did George go the full Monty? Marisa Tomei, who plays a reporter in the film, replied, "He didn't... but we imagined he did."

Clooney added, "I've never skinny dipped in that lake."

"The Ides of March" starts its campaign in theaters Friday.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Tops Blu-ray and DVD Sales Charts

Transformers: Dark of the Moon dominates the Blu-ray and DVD sales charts

Michael Bay's 3D sequel Transformers: Dark of the Moon destroyed its competition on the Blu-ray and DVD shelves in its first few days of release. It made a clean sweep topping the Blu-ray sales charts, DVD sales charts, and DVD rental charts, for the week ending October 2.

The home video sweep is even more impressive since Transformers: Dark of the Moon was released on September 30, a Friday, as opposed to the normal Tuesday release. Basically, it sold more units in three days than any other title amassed in the full week. The new release surpassed Bridesmaids, last week's top seller, which dropped to second place in Blu-ray and DVD sales. Transformers: Dark of the Moon knocked last week's top rental, Thor, down to second place. Paramount is one of the few studios which do not impose a 28-day waiting period for Netflix and Redbox rentals.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon completed the home video sweep by taking the top spot on the Blu-ray sales charts in dominating fashion. Over 64% of all Transformers: Dark of the Moon units sold were in the Blu-ray format.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon also paved the way for its predecessors to reappear on the DVD charts last week. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen finished in 10th place on the DVD sales charts while Transformers finished in 13th place.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon was released June 29th, 2011 and stars Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Julie White, Kevin Dunn, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Alan Tudyk, John Malkovich. The film is directed by Michael Bay.

Peter Hook Vows to 'F--- Over' New Order After 'Disgusting' Reunion

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 01:30 PM PDT

Peter HookMark McNulty

Though he's played some of the greatest basslines in pop music with New Order, Peter Hook didn't exactly endear himself to fans when he announced in 2007 that the band had broken up for a second time. His colleagues in New Order as well as its predecessor Joy Division -- singer-guitarist Bernard Sumner and drummer Stephen Morris -- claimed to have been blindsided and said they'd continue regardless. Lately, Hook has been playing Joy Division songs with his own band, the Light, and thus, in the eyes of his former bandmates and some fans, dishonoring Ian Curtis' legacy. Meanwhile, New Order is reuniting without him for a pair of upcoming October charity gigs.

Before the Light's recent show in Toronto -- during which they played Joy Division's album 'Unknown Pleasures' convincingly, with intensity and power -- the burly bassist stood up at the back of his dressing room, ushered his bandmates out, and made a spirited case for his defense. His craggy features often lighting up with a mischievous gleam, Hooky spoke to Spinner about how Joy Division's legacy is his legacy, too, and offered some choice words about the New Order reunion, his corrosive relationship with his ex-bandmates, and his feelings about a makeup after the break-up.

I understand you started playing Joy Division albums live because Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie never thought that his band's album 'Screamadelica' got the recognition it deserved?

He was saying there were songs on 'Screamadelica' that they didn't play a lot, and he felt now that that was a mistake. That struck a chord with me: there were songs on 'Unknown Pleasures' which we hardly ever played. Once I got out of New Order and was able to look in, I thought, "Why did we never play those songs that three-quarters of us had written?"

I think the main problem was that Bernard didn't like Joy Division -- he preferred New Order, which is fair enough, 'cause it has a completely different sensibility. But for me, who was happy to play both, it just felt quite odd. So at my own club in Manchester [The Factory], I got a group together and played Joy Division's music.
